THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 25, 2009) – Sophomore Ryan Nugent (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) wasted no time scoring the game winner just 50 seconds into overtime to propel the Maritime men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Skyline-opponent Mount St. Mary Saturday night at Reinhart Field. The win improves the Maritime record to 5-4 overall (2-0 Skyline), while the Blue Knights fall to 0-8-1 (0-2-1 Skyline).
Nugent's goal came off of a strange bounce that was mishandled by the Mount St. Mary keeper, which allowed the forward to rifle the ball into the net from close range for the winner. Maritime had to fight to force overtime, as junior Tom Federico (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y./Islip) tallied the equalizing goal with just 12:35 minutes left to play.
The Blue Knights tallied the contest's opening goal in the first half when Drew Altieri fired a very strong shot down low, right in front of the net, which hit off the Maritime goalie, then ricocheted into the net off of a Maritime defender.
In goal for the Privateers, sophomore Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack) picked up his fourth win of the season after stopping five Mount St. Mary shots on goal. Blue Knights' keeper Matthew Darling made seven saves in the losing effort.
Maritime returns to action on Monday, Sept. 27, when the squad plays host to Medgar Evers at 5 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
