THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 23, 2010) – Junior Tom Federico (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y./Islip) broke a scoreless tie in the 69th minute when he received a pass from classmate John Blunden (Arlington, Va./Washington) and found the back of the net for the lone goal of the game in the Maritime men's soccer team's 1-0 victory over Farmingdale State Thursday night at Reinhart Field. The win in the Privateers' Skyline Conference-opener improves the squad's record to an even 4-4 on the season (1-0 Skyline), while the Rams fall to 1-8 (0-2 Skyline).
Federico's goal was his second of the season and brought his point-total to seven thus far in 2010 (two goals and three assists), which ranks third on the squad. Sophomore Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack) recorded his second shutout of the season after stopping all six of the Farmingdale's shots on goal.
For the Rams, keeper Ricky Meschkow made five saves in the losing effort. Farmingdale outshot Maritime 22-10 on the evening.
The Privateers return to action on Saturday night as part of the Maritime College Homecoming Weekend festivities. The team will play host to Skyline-opponent Mount Saint Mary at 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
