THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2010) – Three different players scored first-half goals to lift the Maritime men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over local-rival Lehman College Monday night at Reinhart Field. The victory evens the Privateers' record at 3-3 on the season, while the Lightning falls to 2-4.
Two of the goals were scored off of headers after corner kicks by junior Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge). Freshman David Sparozic (Carmel, N.Y. /Mahopac) tallied the first goal of the game after Tursi's corner met the head of junior Tom Federico (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y./Islip), who headed to the front of the net where Sparozic used his noggin to bury the ball in the back of the net in the fifth minute.
In the 29th minute, sophomore Haluk Erdogen (Istanbul, Turkey/Irmak) scored after receiving a pass from Federico on a two-on-one and blasting the ball through tthe legs of the Lehman goalkeeper into the net. The goal was the Erdogen's team-leading fourth of the season. Maritime's final goal came off another header by junior John Blunden (Arlington, Va./Washington). Tursi and Federico each ended the night with two assists.
Privateer keeper, sophomore Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack) picked up the victory after keeping a clean sheet throughout the first half of action. The Lightning had some late scoring chances, but shots either went wide or were stopped by freshman substitute goalie John Dunne (Southold, N.Y./Southold) (Southold, N.Y./Southold), who saw his first action of his career.
Maritime returns to action tomorrow, Tuesday, Sept. 21, when they play host to SUNY Cobleskill. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
