RIVERDALE, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2010) – The Maritime College women's cross country team finished in a first-place tie with Baruch College and the men's team finished second behind NCAA Division II Goldey Beacom this past Sunday in the Queensborough Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park.
Freshman Jackie Bellisari (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity) won the individual women's title when she ran the 3.1 mile course in 22:07, edging out Brooklyn College's Sabrina Washington by two seconds. Juniors Emily Motz (Amelia, Ohio/Glen Este) (Amelia, Ohio/Glen Este) and Lisa Wasson (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Sacred Heart) (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Sacred Heart) also recorded top-10 finishes by finishing in eighth and 10th place, respectively. Junior Alexandra Carela (Paterson, N.J./Wayne) (Paterson, N.J./Wayne) and senior Danielle Roberts (Candor, N.Y./Candor) (Candor, N.Y./Candor) rounded out the top-five scorers for Maritime.
“What a terrific effort by the women's team,” stated head coach Jim Driscoll. “To finish tied for first in a field of ten colleges is a great accomplishment. Jackie ran an especially gutsy race and held off a late charge by the Brooklyn runner. She is just a freshman, so I'm excited to see just how good she and her teammates can be.”
On the men's side, sophomore Luke Milano (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) finished second in the field of 95 runners in leading the men to the runner-up trophy. Milano covered the five-mile course in 29:39. “We kind of held Milano back at the start with the goal of keeping our front pack together”, said Driscoll. “I give him a lot of credit for putting the team ahead of himself.” Milano was followed by sophomores Gabriel Rosa (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) (9th), Pat Evans (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) (11th), and Sam Rainard (Wheaton, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) (Wheaton, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) (16th), junior Tom Moskowitz (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) (20th), and freshmen Cory O'Farrell (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) (27th) and Frank Morgera (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) (28th).
“I thought Milano ran well, as did Evans and our two freshmen, O'Farrell and Morgera, who ran together as we wanted”, said Driscoll. “I'm a little concerned about our lack of running in packs and the times were a little slower than I had hoped for, but we trained through this meet. I know our All-Conference runners Rosa, Rainard, and Matthew Taraboletti (Titusville, Fla./Astronaut) (Titusville, Fla./Astronaut) will work themselves into shape over the next few weeks and be ready when it matters most at the conference championship on Oct. 31.”
Both cross country teams will return to Van Cortlandt Park next Sunday when they compete in the Hunter Invitational. The women's race will start at 10 a.m. and the men's gun goes off at 11 a.m.
