Baseball Falls To FDU-Florham, 14-1

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 6, 2010) – The Maritime baseball team lost to a strong FDU-Florham team, 14-1, on Tuesday at Reinhart Field. The loss drops the Privateers' record to 6-10 on the season, while the Devils improve to 17-3.

 

Junior Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Levittown, N.Y.) led the way for Maritime, going a perfect 2-for-2 with a double in the second inning and an RBI-single in the seventh. He also reached on a walk in the fifth. Sophomore Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) (Whitehall, Pa.) was 1-for-3 on the night and scored the only run for the Privateers. Sophomores Matt Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y.), freshman Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y.), sophomore Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and freshman Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (Middlesex, N.J.) got Maritime's other hits in the game, as they each recorded singles.

 

Senior Dan Anderson (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Acad.) (Wilmington, Del.) got the loss, pitching four innings and allowing six runs (five earned), while giving up just seven hits and striking out two. FDU-Florham touched Anderson up for three solo home runs to score its first three runs of the game. His record falls to 1-3 overall on the season.

 

For the Devils, freshman Nick Core was 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the squad to victory. Sophomore Matt LaTorre earned the victory after pitching three innings in relief and allowing no runs on just one hit. Classmate George Savaides started for FDU, but only went three innings, striking out three and allowing three hits.

 

The Privateers return to action on Saturday, April 10, when the travel to take on Skyline-opponent Mount Saint Vincent in a doubleheader. Game time is scheduled for Noon.
