NEWBURGH, N.Y. (April 28, 2010) – The No. 6-seed Maritime baseball team lost to No. 3-seed Mount Saint Mary, 9-0, Wednesday afternoon in the single-elimination, first-round game of the 2010 Skyline Conference Championships at the Delano-Hitch Stadium. Despite making the playoffs for the first time with this group of players, the Privateers end the season with an 11-18 record, while the Blue Knights improve to 13-18 and will move on to the four-team, double-elimination tournament this weekend at Farmingdale State.

The Maritime bats were held quiet, as Mount Saint Mary starting pitcher Frank Snyder allowed just three hits over six innings of play. Snyder retired 14 straight batters from the 2nd inning through the 6th before being replaced.

Sophomore Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Franklin Square, N.Y.) had the only multi-game hit for the Privateers, going 2-for-4 from the plate. Senior Andrew Mayer (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) suffered the loss after pitching five innings and allowing seven runs on 12 hits. He ends the year with a 2-5 record.

The Blue Knights wasted no time getting on the board, as their leadoff batter Mike Umphlett hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. They would add another run in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Mount Saint Mary led off with a triple, then score on an RBI-single. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded and two outs, Rich DeRosa smacked a two-RBI single to right field to make the score 5-0. The Blue Knights then scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead to 9-0.

Maritime's best chance to get on the board came in the eighth inning, when junior Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Levittown, N.Y) hit a one-out single to right and was followed by senior Henry Killian (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), who singled to left field. A fielder's choice put runners at first and third, but Mount's reliever Kyle Smith induced an inning-ending groundout to third.

Senior Dan Anderson (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Acad.) (Wilmington, Del.) pitched the final two innings for the Privateers, allowing just one hit and striking out one. Maritime went down in order in the top of the ninth to end the game and the season.
