THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 24, 2010) – The Maritime baseball team swept conference-opponent NYU-Poly in a doubleheader of action Saturday at Reinhart Field to punch its ticket to the 2010 Skyline Tournament beginning next week. The Privateers improve to 11-17 (7-9 Skyline) with the pair of victories, while the Blue Jays fall to 3-18 overall (3-13 Skyline).
Maritime got great pitching efforts from its starters in the twin-bill. Senior Andrew Mayer (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) hurled seven innings in the first game, allowing just one run on three hits, while striking out four. The 6-3 righty earned his second win of the season. In game two, freshman Trevor Canella (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) pitched the seven-inning complete game, allowing an unearned run on 11 hits and striking out six to move to 3-1 overall.
Freshman Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y.) led the Privateers with three RBIs on the day, as he was 2-for-8 from the plate with a double and two runs scored. Maritime had two home runs in the doubleheader, as junior Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) (Elmhurst, N.Y.) and senior Henry Killian (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) both went yard in the second game. Montanes and Killian both ended the day with two runs and two RBIs, while senior Greg Oliva (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y.) and junior Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Levittown, N.Y.) each had two RBIs. Freshman Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (Middlesex, N.J.) had a team high five hits on the day and scored 2 runs.
Junior AJ McPartlan (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) (Huntington Station, N.Y.) was a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen bases in game one, as Maritime swiped 12 bags in the opener. The Privateers continue to dominate on the base paths as they look to improve on their top-ten nationally ranked stolen bases per game. As of Monday, they ranked fourth in the nation with 3.52 steals per game.
For the Blue Jays, Waleed Eltareb led the team with two RBIs, batting 3-for-7 and scoring one run. Jeff Burdier, Jon Pail Anatra and Carlos Ruiz each had one RBI apiece. Eddie Melcer suffered the loss in the first game after pitching four innings and allowing seven runs (five earned) and striking out one. The loss went to Jon Paul Anatra in game two, as he went six innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and struck out four.
The Privateers also held a Senior Day Ceremony in between games one and two, honoring the careers of departing graduates Killian, Mayer, Oliva, Dan Anderson (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Acad.) (Wilmington, Del.) and Mike Zieser (Clark, N.J./Johnston) (Clark, N.J.).
Maritime returns to action tomorrow, April 25, when they play host to non-conference opponent St. Joseph's of Brooklyn in a doubleheader. The first of two seven-inning games are set to begin at 10 a.m. at Reinhart Field.
The No. 6-seed Privateers will open the 2010 Skyline Tournament on Wednesday, April 28, when they travel to Newburgh, N.Y. to face No. 3 Mount Saint Mary. Stay logged onto www.MaritimeAthletics.com for time and location details as they are announced.
