THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 18, 2010) – The Maritime baseball team got swept in a doubleheader by Skyline-opponent Old Westbury on Sunday at Reinhart Field. The Privateers hung close in both games but dropped the first one by a score of 5-0, before losing the second, 5-3. The losses drop Maritime's record to 9-16 overall (5-9 Skyline), while the Panthers improve to 14-16 overall (10-6 Skyline).

Old Westbury's junior starter Marvin Rosario was brilliant in the first game, hurling a three-hit, complete game shutout, while striking out five, to improve to 4-1 on the season. The Panthers got on the board first in the top of the first inning after the leadoff batter was walked. He then stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on an RBI-groundout by Ali Ferreiras. The scored remained 1-0 until the top of the fifth, when Old Westbury tacked on another run on an RBI-single by Melvin Simmons.

The Privateers best chance to get back in the game came in the bottom of the fifth, when they had runners at second and third with one out. However, a strikeout for Rosario and a throw out at home after senior Greg Oliva (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y.) tried to score on a pass ball ended the threat. The Panthers tacked on one more run in the eighth and three in the ninth before claiming the 5-0 victory. Senior Dan Anderson (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Acad.) (Wilmington, Del.) suffered the loss after pitching seven innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits. His record falls to 1-5 on the season.

In game two, Old Westbury again wasted no time and scored two runs in the top of the first inning. They added one more in the top of the second inning to extend their lead to 3-0. Maritime finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, when freshman Christopher Santoro (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) slammed a three run home run over the high right field wall to score junior AJ McPartlan (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) (Huntington Station, N.Y.), Oliva and himself.

The tie score didn't last long, however, as the Panthers regained the lead in the top of the fifth on a solo home run by Giovanni Jimenez. The Privateers would only register two more hits the rest of the way and Old Westbury scored again in the top of the seventh to make it 5-3. A potential seventh-inning rally came to an end on a pop fly to second base to complete the ballgame. The Panthers' Ryan Jarvis earned the victory, his third of the year, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Freshman Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (Middlesex, N.J.) got the loss despite pitching all seven innings. He allowed five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and struck out two, moving his record to 1-3.

The Maritime baseball team returns to action on Thursday, April 22, when the squad plays host to local-rival Kings Point at 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
