THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 17, 2010) – The Maritime baseball team played a doubleheader at Reinhart Field as the visiting team on Saturday against Skyline-opponent Mount Saint Mary. The Privateers dropped the first game by the score of 4-0, before rebounding to take the second game, 5-3, behind a five-run sixth inning. Maritime's overall record moved to 9-14, including a 5-7 mark in Skyline play, while the Blue Knights improved to 6-17 overall, 6-6 Skyline.
The doubleheader was played at Maritime because Mount Saint Mary could not secure a home field. The games were originally scheduled to be played at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y. but the field conditions were not up to par and the threat of inclement weather forced the two schools to agree to play in Throggs Neck, with the Blue Knights being the home team.
Game one was a pitchers' duel and was played very quickly. Mount Saint Mary got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning on a solo home run by the number nine hitter, Rich DeRosa. The Privateers failed to get the tying run across twice, with their best chance coming in the top of the seventh when sophomore Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Franklin Square, N.Y.) reached on an error then stole second. A wild pitch put him 90 feet away from tying the game with two outs, but MSM starter Frank Snyder recorded a big strike out to retire the side. Proscia ended game one batting a team-best 2-for-4
The Blue Knights tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the same inning to expand their lead to 4-0. Maritime would load the bases with two outs in the top of the eight, but Snyder was again able to get out of the jam, this time with a fielder's choice ground out.
Snyder earned the victory to improve to 2-2 overall on the season. He pitched eight shutout inning and allowed just five hits while striking out three. Senior Andrew Mayer (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) suffered the loss, his fourth of the season, despite pitching the complete game and allowing four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts.
The second game, a seven-inning affair, was also close through the opening innings. Mount Saint Mary scored two runs in the bottom of the second and then another one in the fourth to go ahead 3-0. The Privateers broke through with their first, and only, runs of the day in the top of the sixth inning, getting a lot of help from the MSM pitching staff. Maritime got bases loaded without even recording a hit, as senior Greg Oliva (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch and junior Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Levittown, N.Y.) and sophomore Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) (Whitehall, Pa.) both walked. After a pitching change, the next Privateer batter, junior AJ McPartlan (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) (Huntington Station, N.Y.), was walked and Oliva came in to score the first run. Senior Mike Zieser (Clark, N.J./Johnston) (Clark, N.J.) connected for a sacrifice fly that scored Simpson to pull Maritime within 3-2 with two outs. Up next, freshman Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y.) singled to load the bases again and Proscia came up and walked to bring in the tying run. The Blue Knights changed pitchers again and Maritime pinch hit junior Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) (Elmhurst, N.Y.), who delivered the game-winning two-out two-RBI double to give the Privateers the 5-3 lead.
Freshman Trevor Canella (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) pitched brilliantly for his second-straight start, earning the victory after tossing the complete game, six-hitter. He allowed three runs (two earned) and struck out two to improve his record to 2-1.
The Privateers return to action tomorrow, April 18, when they play host to Skyline-foe Old Westbury (12-16). First pitch against the Panthers, who sit three spots ahead of Maritime in fourth place in the conference standings with an 8-6 Skyline mark, is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Reinhart Field.
