THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 14, 2010) – Senior Anthony Tenga (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Fordham Prep) (Throggs Neck, N.Y.) pitched five solid innings, striking out three and allowing only one run on four hits to earn his team-leading third victory of the season Wednesday night as the Maritime baseball team defeated Bronx-rival Lehman 12-1 in non-conference action. The win improves the Privateers' record to 8-13 overall, while the Lightning fall to 7-15.
Tenga was helped out in a large way offensively in the bottom of the second inning, as Maritime had 12 batters come to the plate and scored nine runs on just five hits. Lehman committed three errors on ground balls that extended the inning. The crushing blow came when junior AJ McPartlan (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) (Huntington Station, N.Y.) rocked a two-run home run over the right field fence to make the score 9-0. McPartlan and senior Greg Oliva (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y.) both scored two runs in the inning.
Oliva finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored and one RBI. Sophomore Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Franklin Square, N.Y.) had an RBI double in Maritime's three-run sixth inning then came around to score later in the inning. Proscia ended the day 1-for-5 with two RBIs and a run.
Senior Mike Zieser (Clark, N.J./Johnston) (Clark, N.J.) recorded one RBI and two runs scored, while freshman Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y.) batter one in with one run scored. Sophomore Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) (Whitehall, Pa.) plated the first run of the game with an RBI-single in the second and then came around to score. Senior Henry Killian (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) was 0-for-2 with two walks and an RBI and freshman Chris Myers (Middlesex, N.J.) was 1-for-4 with an RBI-single and a run scored in the second. Junior Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Levittown, N.Y.) scored one run.
On the mound, senior Dan Anderson (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Acad.) (Wilmington, Del.) pitched the sixth for Maritime and allowed two hits and struck out one. He gave way to freshman Red Burke (Warwick, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)) (Warwick, N.Y.) who pitched a two-strikeout one-two-three seventh. Freshman Trevor Canella (Wantagh, N.Y.) was called on to pitch the eighth and allowed one hit and striking out one, before senior Andrew Mayer (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) closed out the game in the ninth.
The Privateers, who currently rank sixth in the Skyline Conference, will return to the field this coming Saturday, April 17, when they travel to face conference-opponent Mount Saint Mary (6-16, 5-5 Skyline) who is in fifth place. The teams will play a doubleheader at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y. First pitch against the Blue Knights is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Also, the start time for the home doubleheader on Sunday, April 18, was pushed back one hour to 11 a.m. The Privateers will square off against the Panthers of Old Westbury at Reinhart Field.
