THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (April 12, 2010) – The Maritime baseball team played two conference doubleheaders on Long Island this past weekend. The Privateers split its twin-bill with Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday, dropping the first game, 12-2, before snapping its seven-game losing streak with a 7-3 victory in the second game. On Sunday, Maritime was swept by Farmingdale State, losing by the scores of 13-3 and 21-9. The Privateers record moves to 7-13 overall, including a 4-6 mark in Skyline games, which ranks sixth in the conference.
Saturday, April 10 – Maritime at Mount Saint Vincent (Baseball Heaven, Yaphank, N.Y.)
Game One Box Score: Mount Saint Vincent 12 – Maritime 2
In the first game on Saturday against the Dolphins, sophomore Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Franklin Square, N.Y.) led the team by going 2-for-4 from the plate with one RBI and one run scored, while senior Henry Killian (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) picked up an RBI when his double in the third scored sophomore Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) (Whitehall, Pa.). Senior starter Andrew Mayer (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) suffered the loss after pitching just 2.2 innings to fall to 1-3 on the season.
Game Two Box Score: Maritime 7 – Mount Saint Vincent 3 (7 innings)
Game two saw freshman starter Trevor Canella (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) pitch a spectacular six innings, allowing just three runs (one earned) on six hits, while striking out three. The win improved Canella's record to 1-1 on the season.
Offensively, the Privateers scored six runs on two outs in the top of the first inning. Freshman Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (Seaford, N.Y.) had a 2-RBI single in the inning and then later came around to score. Myers finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate.
Sunday, April 11- Maritime at Farmingdale State (Baseball Stadium, Farmingdale, N.Y.)
Game One Box Score: Farmingdale State 13 – Maritime 3
Down 5-0, Maritime got on the board in the top of the sixth when sophomore AJ McPartlan (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) (Huntington Station, N.Y.) tripled then scored when Proscia reached on an error. The Rams would open the game up in the bottom of the sixth, however, by tacking on five more runs to go up 10-1. In the top of the eighth, the Privateers scored two more on an RBI-triple by Killian that scored junior Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Levittown, N.Y.) and an RBI-groundout by junior Anthony Tenga (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Fordham Prep) (Throggs Neck, N.Y.). Myers suffered the loss after pitching 5.1 innings, dropping his record to 1-2.
Game Two Box Score: Farmingdale State 21 – Maritime 9
The second game was a shootout from the beginning, as Maritime scored four runs in the top of the first inning, only to allow seven runs to Farmingdale State in the bottom half of the inning. McPartlan went 2-for-3 in the game with two RBIs and one run scored, while freshman Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y.) was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Senior Dan Anderson (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Acad.) (Wilmington, Del.) got the loss after pitching two innings. Anderson's record drops to 1-4.
The Maritime baseball team returns to action on Wednesday, April 14, when the squad plays host to Bronx-rival Lehman in a non-conference contest. First pitch against the Lightning is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
