THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 9, 2010) – A leadoff solo home run by junior Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) in the bottom of the eighth inning proved to be the difference, as the Maritime baseball team outslugged John Jay, 11-10, in its season-opener Tuesday night at Reinhart Field. With the win, the Privateers begin the 2010 campaign with a 1-0 record – the first time the program has started the year with a victory since the 2005 season - while the Bloodhounds fall to 1-7 overall.

Montanes had a stellar performance, finishing the night 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and runs, while junior Greg Oliva (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Junior Anthony Tenga (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Fordham Prep) picked up the victory after three scoreless innings pitched.

The Privateers got on the board first with four runs in the bottom of the opening inning. Two straight singles by Montanes, freshman Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) and an RBI single by sophomore Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) helped score the first run. A walk and another single by sophomore Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) put the Privateers up 2-0, before Oliva plated two with his single to right field.

John Jay fought back with two in the third and then took the lead in the fourth with four more runs, going up 6-4. However, the lead was short-lived, as Maritime answered with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-6 lead. The Privateers tacked on another run with a solo home run by freshman Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) in the bottom of the fifth.

The Bloodhounds had another four-run inning in the sixth to tie the score at 10-10. The John Jay starter, junior Taylor Perez, was kept in to face the top of the order in the bottom of the eighth, but three pitches in surrendered the game-winning homer to Montanes. Perez got the loss and moved to 0-2 on the season.

The Maritime baseball team returns to action tomorrow night, March 10, when the squad plays host to Baruch College at 6:30 p.m. at the Reinhart Field Baseball Complex.
