Women’s Lacrosse Opens Season With 20-2 Victory Over Saint Elizabeth

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 6, 2010) – The Maritime women's lacrosse team opened the 2010 season with a 20-2 win over the College of Saint Elizabeth on Saturday at Reinhart Field. The Privateers begin the year 1-0 for the first time in program history, while the Eagles fall to 0-1.

 

Eight different players scored for Maritime on the day, as senior Heather Christiansen (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) led the way with a game-high six goals on six shots. Junior Jill Davenport (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and sophomore tri-captain Catherine Brady (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) each had hat tricks with three goals apiece, while junior Alyssa Vecchione (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream), sophomore Kristin Saporito and freshman Kristen Wilson (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) each chipped in with two goals. Sophomore Danielle Meeker (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Jefferson) and freshman Jorrie Trenkamp (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) each found the back of the net once. Returners Vecchione and Meeker scored their first career goals.

 

Christiansen also led the Privateers with eight ground balls, while junior tri-captain Natalie Warren (Peachtree City, Ga./Homeschooled), Vecchione and Trenkamp each recorded six ground balls. Saporito was clutch in the faceoff circle, winning eight of her 11 draws, while Brady was 6-for-11.

 

In net for Maritime, senior Meagan Golden (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) fell just seven minutes shy of a shutout, but finished the day with the win and one save.

 

Freshmen Meghan Murray and Kelsey Dzamba scored the goals for Saint Elizabeth, both on free position shots.

 

The Privateers return to action on Saturday, March 20, when they travel to face Cazenovia. First faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
