Baseball Drops Sunday Doubleheader To St. Joseph’s

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 28, 2010) – The Maritime baseball team was swept in a conference doubleheader by St. Joseph's on a rainy Sunday at Reinhart Field. The Privateers dropped the first game by the score of 12-4 and the Eagles commanded the second game, winning the seven inning contest, 16-3. Maritime falls to 6-7 overall on the season (3-3 Skyline), while St. Joe's improves to 8-10 (5-1 Skyline).

 

The Golden Eagles scored quickly in the first inning, on a 3-run homer by cleanup batter, Chris Wright. The Privateers responded in the bottom of the first when a double to left field by junior AJ McPartlan (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) (Huntington Station, N.Y.) plated two. Three innings later, in the bottom of the fourth, freshman Christopher Santoro (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) tied the game at 3-3 with a one-out, solo home run to right.

 

St. Joseph's went back ahead in the top of the fifth by scoring two runs, one off the bat of right fielder Prateek Thaman on a solo homer to right center, to take a 5-3 lead. The Eagles added four more – just two earned – in the top of the sixth and then three more in the ninth to pull ahead, 12-3. An RBI-single by sophomore Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Franklin Square, N.Y.) in the bottom of the ninth ended the scoring for the game.

 

Senior Andrew Mayer (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) was credited with the loss after pitching seven innings and allowing nine runs (six earned) on seven hits, while striking out three. Mayer moves to 1-1 on the season. St. Joseph's junior Justin Maravegias earned the victory to improve to 2-1 after pitching a complete game, allowing four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.

 

The second game saw St. Joe's score in the first inning again, as they picked up two unearned runs to start off the game. The Eagles tacked on four more in the top of the second to increase its advantage to 6-0. Freshman Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (Middlesex, N.J.) scored in the bottom of the third for Maritime, but St. Joseph's responded with one run in the top of the fourth and five in the top of the fifth to go ahead, 12-1. Santoro scored the next two runs for the Privateers, including another solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, his second on the day.

 

Senior Dan Anderson (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Acad.) (Wilmington, Del.) picked up the loss to fall to 1-2 on the season, pitching four innings and allowing 11 runs (six earned)on 10 hits and striking out one. Eagles senior John Okerblom pitched the seven-inning complete game and earned the win, his second of 2010, after allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out five.

 

Maritime baseball has the school-week off and returns to action next weekend on Saturday, April 3, when the squad travels to Staten Island for a doubleheader against CSI. First pitch is scheduled for noon at the Dolphins' CSI Baseball Complex.
