THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 27, 2010) – The Maritime baseball team won one and lost one against the City College of New York on Saturday at Reinhart field, taking the first game by a score of 11-3 before dropping the second of the twin-bill 4-2. Both games were a shortened seven innings. With the split, the Privateers improve to 6-5 overall – already surpassing their win total of five from the 2009 season – while the Beavers move to 7-6 on the season.
In the first game, Maritime fell behind 1-0 after the top of the first, but went ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run by freshman Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y.), an RBI-single by senior Greg Oliva (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y.) that scored sophomore Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and another RBI-single by sophomore Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) (Whitehall, Pa.) that scored junior AJ McPartlan (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) (Franklin Square, N.Y.).
The Beavers would tie the score at 3-apeice in the top of the second, but another three runs by the Privateers in the bottom of the second gave Maritime a 6-3 lead. Junior Matt Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y.) doubled to score freshman Christopher Santoro (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), followed by Martinez reaching on error that scored Montanes, and then an RBI-single by Procsia that plated Martinez.
The Privateers scored three more runs in the fourth on four hits and were helped out by three CCNY errors in the inning, before rounding out their scoring in the sixth on a two-RBI single by senior Henry Killian (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) that made the score 11-3.
Junior Anthony Tenga (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Fordham Prep) (Throggs Neck, N.Y.) pitched the complete game, seven innings, striking out two and allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits to improve his record to 2-1 on the season.
The second game saw Maritime again fall ahead 1-0 in the first, before scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-single by Proscia that scored Martinez and then Proscia came around to score on a wild pitch to put the Privateers ahead 2-1. City College scored in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2, and then went ahead, 3-2 in the fifth. Maritime went down in order over the last four innings and the Beavers tacked another run on in the seventh to claim the 4-2 victory.
Freshman William Dise (Port Jervis, N.Y./Port Jervis) (Port Jervis, N.Y.) was credited with the loss, allowing just one run over two innings of relief. Dise moves to 0-1 on the season. Freshman Patrick Hall (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (Wantagh, N.Y.) started the game, going four innings and allowing two runs (none earned) on just two hits while striking out two.
