THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 25, 2010) - Behind 14 stolen bases in the game, the Maritime baseball team defeated the City College of New York, 10-7, Wednesday night at Reinhart Field. The win improves the Privateers' record to 5-4 overall, while the Beavers fall to 6-4.

Senior Mike Zieser (Clark, N.J./Johnston) (Clark, N.J.) led the way for Maritime at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and hitting what would wind up being a game-winning RBI single in the top of the seventh inning. Zieser also swiped a game-high three bases in the victory. All but one runner for the Privateers stole at least one base on the night.

Freshman Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y.) was 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and junior AJ McPartlan (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) (Huntington Station, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Sophomore Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Franklin Sqaure, N.Y.) and senior Greg Oliva (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y.) both had one run, one hit and one RBI, while junior Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Levittown, N.Y.) recorded one RBI on the night.

The Privateers wasted no time scoring, putting up three runs with two outs in the bottom of the first on four straight singles. The Beavers responded with five runs in the top of the second inning, getting help from three Maritime errors. The home team regained the lead with three runs in the fourth to pull ahead 6-5, but City College tacked one run on in both the fifth and the sixth to take a 7-6 lead. Maritime would tie it in the bottom of the sixth, before taking the lead for good with two runs in the seventh. On final run scored in the eighth put the Privateers up, 10-7.

Freshman reliever Red Burke (Warwick, N.Y./Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)) (Warwick, N.Y.) earned the victory, the first of his career, after clutch pitching over the final 2.1 innings. He came in with the score tied 7-7 in the seventh and CCNY had runners at first and third with two outs and forced a groundout to first base to end the threat. He later ended the game by striking out the side in the ninth.

Burke had replaced freshman Luke Milano (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (Wantagh, N.Y.) who was remarkable through 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on just four hits and striking out three. Milano was called into long relief after freshman starter Patrick Hall (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (Wantagh, N.Y.) lasted 1.1 and allowed five runs (only one earned, however).

Maritime returns to action on Saturday, March 27, when the squad plays host to the same Beavers of City College in a double header starting at 10 a.m. at Reinhart Field.
