ALFRED, N.Y. (March 21, 2010) – The Maritime women's lacrosse team lost to Alfred University, 19-4, Sunday afternoon at the Saxons' Merrill Field. With the loss, the Privateers fall to 1-2 overall, while Alfred improves to 3-1 on the season.
Sophomore-transfer Kristen Saporito (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) (Rocky Point, N.Y.) scored the first goal for Maritime, but it came with the Privateers already trailing, 6-0, nearly 11 minutes into the game. Senior Heather Christiansen (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) (Baldwin, N.Y.) then scored Maritime's second goal, with just under two minutes to play in the opening half. The Saxons took a 10-2 lead into the locker room.
Christiansen added her second tally of the day on a free position shot at 18:54 of the second half, which cut the disadvantage to 15-3. Saporito scored her second as well in the second, with just 40 seconds remaining in the game to end the scoring on the day.
Sophomore tri-captain Catherine Brady (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) (Holbrook, N.Y.) tallied a team-high six ground balls and had two draw controls. Senior goalie Meagan Golden (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) (Point Pleasant, N.J.) stopped 13 Saxon shots in the loss.
The Privateers return to action on Friday, March, 26, when they play host to Skyline-opponent Farmingdale State at 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
