Baseball Sweeps Skyline-Doubleheader At Yeshiva

BRONX, N.Y. (March 22, 2010) - The Maritime baseball team swept a conference-doubleheader from Yeshiva University on Sunday afternoon, March 21, at nearby Taft High School in the Bronx. The Privateers won the first game, 4-1, before completing the sweep with a 6-0 shutout in the second game. Maritime improves to an even 4-4 overall (3-1 Skyline), while the Maccabees fall to 0-8 (0-5 Skyline).

The opening game was close as Maritime scored first in the top of the second after junior Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Levittown, N.Y.) got a two-out single, stole second and then was brought home on an RBI-double by freshman Chris Santoro (Lindenhurst, N.Y.). Yeshiva answered in the bottom of the fifth, after a leadoff walk turned into the tying run. The game remained tied 1-1 until the top of the ninth inning, where sophomore Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Franklin Square, N.Y.) started the inning off reaching on an error then stealing second and third. He scored on an RBI-single by senior Greg Oliva (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y.). Maritime then loaded the bases and added two insurance runs on a two-RBI single by Simpson to take a 4-1 lead. Simpson finished the game going 2-for-4 from the plate with one run and two RBIs.

Senior
Dan Anderson (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Acad.) (Wilmington, Del.) picked up the victory after pitching eight strong innings and allowing just one run on four hits, with six strikeouts. Anderson moves to 1-1 overall on the season. Freshman Luke Milano (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (Wantagh, N.Y.) came in in the ninth to close out the game and earn his first collegiate save, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one.

The second game was dominated by freshman pitcher
Christopher Myers (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) (Middlesex, N.J.), who tossed a seven-inning complete game. Myers allowed just one hit and struck out seven to claim the victory, the first of his career.

Maritime quickly jumped ahead, scoring four runs on just three hits, while being helped out by two Maccabee errors. Oliva hit a two-RBI single to plate the first two runs: senior
Mike Zieser (Clark, N.J./Johnston) (Clark, N.J.) and freshman Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) (Yonkers, N.Y.) scored on the play. Sophomore Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) (Whitehall, Pa.) then added a sacrifice fly to score Proscia. Oliva scored to make it 4-0 on an RBI-double by Simpson.

Proscia added an RBI-single in the second to score Santoro to give the Privateers a 5-0 advantage. In the fourth, senior
Henry Killian (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) hit a one-out single then came around to score on a single by Martinez.

The Privateers return to action on Tuesday, March 23, when they play host to City College at 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
