THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 20, 2010) – The Maritime baseball team split a pair of games at Reinhart Field on Saturday with Skyline opponent Purchase. The Privateers held off a late rally to win the first game, 8-6, before falling in the seven-inning second game, 11-1. Maritime improves to 2-4 (1-1 Skyline) on the season, while the Panthers move to 5-2 (1-1 Skyline).

Senior Andrew Mayer (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) picked up the victory in the first game after pitching eight strong innings, giving up just two runs (one earned) on five hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Franklin Square, N.Y.) got things started at the plate for the Privateers in the bottom of the first with a three run home run to center field. Proscia finished the game 1-for-5 with 3 RBIs and a run scored, while catcher Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Martinez slapped a two-out two-RBI single in the three-run fourth inning. Sophomore Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) (Whitehall, Pa.) and freshman Christopher Santoro (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) each contributed an RBI apiece.

Purchase mounted a ninth-inning rally, scoring four runs on five hard hits, including a two-RBI double that was just a few feet from being a game-tying grand slam. Maritime's Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Levittown, N.Y.) was able to retire the final two batters, striking out the last to end the ball game with the tying run on second base.

For the Panthers, junior Austin Groves went 1-for-4 and led the team with two RBIs in the first game, while starting pitcher sophomore Chris Carboni lasted 4.2 innings and gave up eight runs on ten hits for the loss.

In the second game, the Privateers scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning, but it was all Purchase after. The Panthers put up a five-spot in the top of the second inning to go ahead 5-1. They then added two in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the seventh to claim the 11-1 victory.

Senior DH Greg Oliva (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had Maritime's only RBI on double to center. Freshman Trevor Canella (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) was roughed up for eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits while striking out four and suffering the loss.

The Privateers return to action tomorrow, Sunday, March 21, when they take on conference-opponent Yeshiva on the road in a double header slated to begin at noon. The game will be played at Taft High School in the Bronx.
