KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 18, 2010) – The Maritime baseball team lost to rival Kings Point, 11-6, in an eight-inning, darkness-shortened affair on Thursday at the Mariners' Lower Roosevelt Field. The Privateers fall to 1-3 in defeat, while USMMA improves to 2-4.

The Privateers were forced to play catch-up, as Kings Point took advantage of three Maritime errors and scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Mariners tacked on one more run in the second to go ahead 8-1, before the Privateers scored three in the top of the third. Junior Matt Montanes hit a one-out double to center to start things. Freshman Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) hit an RBI single up the middle. Martinez then reached second on a ground out and scored on double by senior Greg Oliva (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford). Junior AJ McPartlan (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) plated Oliva with a single to left to pull Maritime to within five, 8-3.

USMMA tacked on another run in the bottom of the third to increase its advantage to 9-3. In the top of the fifth, the Privateers scored two runs on two hits, as junior Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) had an RBI single scoring Oliva and McPartlan scored when he was able to steal home after a throw down to first base.

The Mariners added one run in the fifth and another in the seventh to go ahead 11-5. Maritime would score in what would be the top of the last inning on an RBI single to right by Montanes, before darkness made it impossible to continue the game.

Martinez was 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and a run, while Montanes, Oliva and Simpson were all 2-for-4 with an RBI. Oliva scored two run, while McPartlan finished the day with two stolen bases. Junior starter Anthony Tenga (Throggs Neck, N.Y./Fordham Prep) was credited with the loss and falls to 1-1 on the season after allowing seven runs (one earned) in just 0.2 innings. Freshman Patrick Hall (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) came into the game in long relief and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing three runs and striking out one, giving way to classmate Redmond Burke who was stellar in an 1.2 innings allowing no runs and striking out two. Senior Henry Killian (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) finished the game, pitching the bottom of the seventh, allowing one run and striking out two.

The Privateers begin Skyline Conference action this weekend, when they host the Panthers of SUNY Purchase on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Reinhart Field.
