THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 17, 2010) – The Maritime baseball team scored eight runs over the last three innings, but couldn't overcome an early deficit and fell to the City College of New York, 12-9, on Wednesday at Reinhart Field. With the loss, the Privateers fall to 1-2, while the Beavers improve to 4-2.
Sophomore Matt Jernegan (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) was 3-for-4 at the plate with a game-high 3 RBIs and a stolen base, while junior Matthew Montanes (Elmhurst, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) was 3-for-6, scored three runs and plated two and also swiped two bases. Senior starter Andrew Mayer (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson) pitched two innings and allowed just one run on no hits and was replaced by classmate Dan Anderson (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Acad.). Anderson got the loss after pitching two an a third and being lifted after getting touched up for six runs (only three earned) in the fifth inning.
CCNY got the scoring started after manufacturing a run in the second. Their leadoff batter was hit by a pitch, then stole second and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. He would score on a ground out. Maritime tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the third when an RBI single by freshman Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) plated Montanes.
The Beavers took advantage of eight Maritime errors in the game, with three coming in the eight-run fifth inning, giving them a comfortable 9-1 lead. CCNY added three more in the top of the seventh, again after the Privateers committed three more errors, to take a 12-1 advantage. Freshman Luke Milano (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) came into a bases loaded jam with no outs and threw eight pitches and recorded a fielder's choice out at home and two strikeouts to retire the side.
In the bottom of seventh, Jernegan got his first RBI with a single to center that scored sophomore Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity). The next inning, Maritime scored four runs on three hits, getting RBIs from Montanes, Proscia, senior Greg Oliva (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and Jernegan.
Maritime pulled even closer in the bottom half of the ninth, when the saw the game-winning run come to the plate with the bases loaded. However, after RBIs by Montanes, Proscia and Jernegan, the Beavers brought in their closer for one out and he was able get the strikeout to win the game.
Sophomore Joel Jimenez picked up the win for CCNY, while senior Willis Fernandez earned the one-out save.
The Privateers return to field on Thursday, March 18, when they travel across the Long Island Sound to take on arch-rival Kings Point. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
