THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 10, 2010) – The Maritime baseball team lost to Baruch, 9-6, Wednesday night at Reinhart Field. The Privateers fall to 1-1 in defeat, while the Bearcats open the 2010 season with a 1-0 record.
Maritime led 6-5 going into the top of the ninth inning and were an out away from its second victory in as many days, but Baruch rallied for four runs to take the late lead. The Privateers went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
The Bearcats scored the first run of the game on a homer in the top of the third and then added three more in the top of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Maritime fought back with three runs in the fourth thanks in large part to four Baruch errors, and then tied the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the fifth after a double by freshman Ed Martinez (Yonkers, N.Y./Stepinac) and an RBI single by sophomore Jonathan Proscia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Holy Trinity).
The score remained the same until the top of the seventh, when Baruch manufactured a run after a single, a stolen base and then an RBI single to go up 5-4. Maritime answered in the bottom of the eighth when junior Ryan Simpson (Levittown, N.Y./Holy Trinity) plated the tying run with an RBI single to left, then freshman Max Lockwood (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) brought home the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly to put the Privateers up, 6-5.
Proscia and junior Greg Oliva (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) each finished the night 2-for-4 from the plate with one RBI and one run scored to lead Maritime. Simpson gets the loss after pitching two innings, despite allowing no earned runs, and moves to 0-1 on the season. Freshman Jason Berliner earned the victory for the Bearcats and classmate Noel Placencia picked up the save.
The Privateers return to action on Saturday, March 13, when they play host to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. at Reinhart Field.
