THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 6, 2010) – After shooting just 37.9-percent from the field in the first half and clinging on to a one-point lead, the Maritime men's basketball team scored 57 points in the second on a remarkable 74.1-percent shooting performance to defeat Skyline Conference-foe Farmingdale State, 84-63, Saturday afternoon at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The win, the Privateers' seventh consecutive, improves Maritime's record to 15-4 (11-3 Skyline), while the Rams fall to 9-10 overall (9-5 Skyline). It also improves the Privateers' record to a perfect 10-0 at home this season.
All five Maritime starters recorded double-digit scoring efforts, led by junior Justin Bright (Brooklyn, N.Y./Park West), who recorded a game-high 19 points and five assists. Bright shot 7-for-11 from the field, including 2-for-5 from three-point range, and was 3-for-4 from the free throw line. Senior Adedokun Olanrewaju (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) registered a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, as classmate Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) and junior Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) each scored 14 points. Junior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points, while senior Sean Robinson (Bronx, N.Y./H.S. for Art & Design) recorded seven points off the bench.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair until the Privateers pulled out to a nine-point lead, 25-16, with 6:03 to play. Farmingdale finished the half on a 10-2 run over the final 4:44 and brought just a one-point deficit, 27-26, into the break.
Maritime came out of halftime strong to start second and gained its first double-digit lead of the game, 48-37, on a highlight-reel fast break dunk by Cooper. The senior PG then drained his “and-one” free throw to give the Privateers a 12-point lead. The momentum stayed with Maritime the rest of the way, as its lead didn't come back to single-digits from that point on.
The Privateers return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 9, when they play host to non-conference opponent Berkeley College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
