After a first half that saw Maritime build up a few double-digit leads, Poly fought back to within four at the half, 29-25. In the second, the Privateers took their largest lead, 12 points, after junior Shamair Williams knocked down a pair of free throws with 12:31 to play. However, the Blue Jays went on a 15-2 run over the next seven minutes to take a 49-48 win after nailing two free throws with 7:08 to play.
NYU-Poly built its lead up to four points at 52-48 after a three pointer with 6:44 to play, but Maritime would respond with its own 15-2 run to close out the game. Key plays down the stretch included a deep corner jumper by Hurley, as well as a 3-pointer from the big man, and junior Justin Bright (Brooklyn, N.Y./Park West) putting the game away with three good free throws in the closing seconds.
Hurley was 10-for-19 from the floor and recorded a game-high five steals in the win. Bright also finished the game with another 20-point performance on 7-for-19 shooting (including 3-for-6 from three-point range) and a 3-for-4 mark from the line, while leading all players with five assists. Williams ended the night with nine points.
The win is head coach Jody King's 42nd with Maritime basketball, which doubles the program's win total from the previous five seasons before he arrived combined (21 wins from 2002-03 to 2006-07).
The Privateers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 6, when the squad plays host to Skyline-foe Farmingdale State. Tipoff against the Rams is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
