WESTBURY, N.Y. (Feb. 26, 2010) – The No. 4-seed Maritime men's basketball team lost on the road to top-seeded Old Westbury, 61-46, Friday night in the Skyline Conference semifinals at the Clark Athletic Center in Long Island. With the loss, the Privateers fall to 19-8 overall, while the Panthers improve to 20-6 and will play in the Skyline Championship game tomorrow night at home.
Junior Justin Bright (Brooklyn, N.Y./Park West) led all players with 16 points, 14 of which came in the second half, and picked up six rebounds in the loss. Senior Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) recorded his second-straight double-double with 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while junior Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) scored eight points on the night. Senior Adedokun Olanrewaju (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) chipped in with five points and seven boards and junior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) scored four points with seven rebounds.
The lead changed three times in the first three minutes of the game, until 17:02 when Williams hit the first of his two three-pointers on the night to make the score, 7-5, Maritime. The Privateers would go on to build the lead up to eight points, 23-15, after a pair of free throws by Olanrewaju with 6:15 to play in the first. However, Old Westbury stole the momentum and finished the half on a 13-1 run to take a four-point lead into the half, 28-24.
In the second, the Panthers maintained the lead and expanded it to nine points at 14:47. The score then remained the same for over two minutes, until Old Westbury's Hakim George hit a long-distance three-pointer to beat the shot clock at 12:31 to give the Panthers a 42-30 lead. The Privateers were forced to burn their third timeout. Maritime fought back to within three points, 43-40 on five straight baskets by Bright, but failed to get any closer despite having two possessions. The Panthers built their lead back up to nine points, 49-40, and then took all the momentum after an alley-oop dunk by Lester Prosper gave them a double-digit lead, 51-40, with 1:21 to play. Maritime would only get as close as eight points, finally falling to the No. 1 seed.
