THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 18, 2010) – The Maritime men's basketball team lost, 89-77, to second-place St. Joseph's on Senior Night Thursday at the Reisenberg Hall Gymnasium. With the loss, the Privateers fall to 17-7 (13-6 Skyline), while the Golden Eagles improve to 16-8 (15-4 Skyline) in victory.

Junior Justin Bright (Brooklyn, N.Y./Park West) led all players with 27 points, but it was not enough for Maritime, who suffers its third-straight loss. Bright also added a game-high six assists, while bringing down four boards. Two other players scored in double-figures for the Privateers: senior Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern), who was playing in his final regular season home game, tallied 13 points, while junior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) had 13 points as well and a team-high five rebounds.

Momentum started in St. Joseph's favor in the first half, as the Golden Eagles built up seven-point lead early, 13-6. A Maritime timeout helped turn things back to their side, as the Privateers went on a 10-3 run to tie the game at 16-16 on a layup by junior Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) (four points, four rebounds). Maritime then blasted out to an 11-point lead, its largest of the night, on a jumper by Bright at 3:39, but settled for a seven-point lead, 39-32, into the break.

The Privateers got into foul trouble early in the second half, committing five in the first four minutes – including two in one St. Joseph's possession that resulted in a three-pointer to tie the game at 45-45 at 16:39. The Golden Eagles regained the lead on their next possession, but then the advantaged swapped sides five times before St. Joe's took the lead for good at 11:41 on a three-pointer that made it, 59-57. The Privateers came back within two points at 63-61, but the Golden Eagles would play strong and capture a double-digit lead, then held on for the victory.

Maritime returns to actions on Saturday, Feb. 20, for its regular season finale at Mount Saint Vincent. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
