THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 13, 2010) – The Maritime men's basketball team lost its first game at home this season and its nine-game winning streak came to an end with a 72-68 double-overtime loss to Purchase Saturday afternoon at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium. The Privateers fall to 17-5 (13-4 Skyline) in defeat, while the Panthers improve to 16-8 (13-6 Skyline).

Senior Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) scored a team-high 21 points to lead Maritime, but fouled out on a questionable offensive foul late in the first overtime, forcing the Privateers to play down their leading scorer in the second extra session. Purchase scored the first five points in the second overtime and was able to hold off the Privateers, who came within two points in the final minute, but a late jumper by the Panthers ended the scoring 72-68.

Junior Justin Bright (Brooklyn, N.Y./Park West) nearly was one rebound away from a double-double with 12 points and nine boards, while his seven assists led all players in the game. Classmate Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) had 12 points, seven boards and five steals and senior Adedokun Olanrewaju (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Junior Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) chipped in with nine points, while classmate Andrew Geisel (Media, Pa./Penncrest) contributed five points off the bench.

Maritime overcame a 15-point second-half deficit, 51-36, with 12:43 to play to tie the game at 58-58 at the 3:27 mark. Cooper scored 11-points over that stretch, including the two free throws that tied the score. Neither team would record another point the remainder of the second half, as two missed free throws late and a missed layup by Purchase as time ticked off ended regulation in a tie.

The first overtime saw the Privateers earn their first lead since early in the second half, but both teams exchanged baskets and Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) would nail one of two free throws to tie the score at 62-62, forcing the second and final extra period.

Maritime returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 16, when the squad travels to take on Farmingdale State. Tipoff against the Rams is scheduled for 7 p.m. and live audio will be provided for free by the Privateer Radio Network. You can access the audio by clicking here.
