THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Feb. 1, 2010) – Maritime junior point guard Justin Bright (Brooklyn, N.Y./Park West) was named the Skyline Conference Basketball Player of the Week on Monday following his superb performances in conference-victories over Bard and Mount Saint Mary last week. Bright becomes the third different Privateer player to be named Player of the Week by the Skyline this season (more than any other school thus far): senior Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) earned the accolade on Dec. 7 and classmate Adedokun Olanrewaju (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) claimed the honor on Jan. 18.
Bright averaged 22.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals over the two wins. On Wednesday at Bard, the Brooklyn, N.Y., native notched his first double-double of the season with a team-high 24 points (22 of which came in the second half) and 11 boards. He was three assists shy of a triple-double, notching seven helpers on the night. On Saturday at home against Mount Saint Mary, the 6-0, 175-pounder matched the game-high with 20 points, including a 7-for-8 mark from the free-throw line in the second half.
Cooper was also named to the Skyline basketball weekly honor roll on Monday for his play over the two-game stretch last week. He averaged 19.0 points, 6.0 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game for Maritime. On Saturday against the Blue Knights, the 6-2, 172-pounder was two assists shy of a double-double with 17 points and eight dimes.
Cooper is the Privateers leading scorer on the season and currently ranks fourth in the conference with 16.3 points per game, while his 3.80 assists per game is good for fifth and his .779 free-throw percentage ranks sixth in the Skyline. Olanrewaju also ranks in the conference's top-10 in four categories: rebounding (second with 8.2 per game), field-goal percentage (second with 58.2-percent), free-throw percentage (third with 81.3-percent) and scoring (seventh with 14.1 points per game).
Juniors Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) and Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) find themselves among the league's best as well. Williams' 54.6-percent shooting from the field ranks fourth and his 40.4-percent clip from beyond the 3-point arc is sixth, while Hurley comes in at seventh in three categories: rebounding (7.1 rpg), field-goal percentage (58.2-percent) and steals (2.00 spg).
