Basketball Loses On The Road To John Jay, 102-68

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Dec. 9, 2010) – The Maritime men's basketball team lost on the road Thursday night to non-conference opponent John Jay by the score of 102-68 at the Bloodhounds' Doghouse. The Privateers record now falls to 5-3 overall on the season, while John Jay improves to 5-3 as well.

Maritime was led by senior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) and junior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park), who each recorded 19 points on the night. Hurley picked up his team-leading sixth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds to pace the Privateers. Junior Sam Porte (Harlem, N.Y./H.S. for Math, Science & Engineering) (Harlem, N.Y./\Math, Science & Engineering) and sophomore Hugh Byrd (Pequannock, N.J./DePaul Catholic) (Newfoundland, N.J./DePaul Catholic) each scored nine points in the losing effort. Byrd brought down seven rebounds, as did sophomore William Sherwood (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), who also scored seven points.

The Bloodhounds were led by Jerome Alexander, who scored a game-high 37 points, while recorded six boards and five assists. Jamar Harry led all players with 19 rebounds and registered a double-double with 13 points. Isaiah Holman (19 points) and Lionel Lorquet (10 points) rounded out the double-digit scorers for John Jay.

The Privateers held the lead for the majority of the first half and saw its biggest advantage at eight points when McSloy nailed a jumper to make the score 20-12 with 10:09 left to play in the opening period. The Bloodhounds fought back, however and took a three-point lead into the half, 33-30.

In the second half, John Jay exploded from the first inbound and quickly got its lead up to double-digits. After an 11-0 run by the Bloodhounds, the score was 49-33. Maritime was able to cut the deficit down to 11 points, 68-57, with 8:05 remaining on a layup by Porte, but would not get any closer as John Jay took off for the victory.

Maritime will take two weeks off for finals week and the Christmas break and will return to the hardwood on Thursday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. when the Privateers play host to NYU. Hurley now sits just 23 points shy of 1,000 points for his career and has a good shot of doing it at Riesenberg Hall during that game.
