Privateers Erase Nine-Point Second Half Deficit To Beat Farmingdale State 72-71

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (Dec. 8, 2010) – The Maritime men's basketball team rallied from a nine-point second half deficit to defeat Skyline Conference-foe Farmingdale State, 72-71, Tuesday night at the Rams' Walter A. Lynch Sports Center. The win moves the Privateer record to 5-2 overall on the season, including a 3-1 mark in Skyline action, while Farmingdale State falls to 2-3 overall (1-1 Skyline).

Two players scored in double-figures for the Privateers: seniors Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) and Quamel Lyerly (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence). Hurley paced all players with 24 points and 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season, while Lyerly recorded 23 points and eight boards. Hurley also had a game-high five steals and he now sits just 42 points away from 1,000 for his career. Senior Paul Suarino (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) chipped in with nine points and five rebounds. Junior Mike McSloy (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) registered seven points and a game-high five assists, while senior Andrew Geisel (Media, Pa./Penncrest) (Media, Pa./Penncrest) drained seven points and brought down five rebounds.

            Maritime controlled play early in the first half and built up a lead of as much as seven points at two points: after sophomore William Sherwood (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) made a layup at 10:05 and again at 5:17 when Hurley made a layup to make the score 28-21. The Rams would go on a 17-6 run from that point, however and take a four-point, 38-24, lead into the locker room for halftime. Hurley and Lyerly had 14 and 13 points, respectively and the Privateers shot 40-percent from the field to Farmingdale's 41.9-percent. The Rams were 55.6-percent from three-point range (5-for-9).

            In the second half, Farmingdale State built its lead up to eight points on four different occasions before taking its largest lead of the night, nine-points at 62-56, after Dyshaun Flournoy hit a free throw with 8:40 to play. Maritime responded with a 12-2 run to take a one-point lead 65-64 after Geisel nailed a three-pointer with 4:39 to play. The lead changed once more and the Rams built it up to four, 69-65 with 3:09 to play. The Privateers would score the next seven points to take a three-point lead, 72-69, with 50 second remaining. The Rams cut the deficit to one point on a layup by Josh Smith, but despite three chances to win it at the end, all three shots missed, including one blocked by Hurley, and Maritime held on for the victory.

            The Privateers ended the night shooting 44.8-percent from the field to Farmingdale's 40.6-percent. The Rams were led by Smith, who recorded 18 points, and Flournoy, who scored 14 points off the bench for FSU.

            Maritime returns to action on Thursday, when the team steps out of Skyline Conference action to take on John Jay on the road. Tipoff between the Privateers and Bloodhounds is scheduled for 7 p.m. at John Jay's Doghouse.
