Privateers Look To Run The Table With Regular-Season Finale At Gallaudet

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 5, 2010) – The Maritime football team (9-0, 6-0 ECFC) will look to finish the 2010 regular season undefeated on Saturday when the squad travels down to the nation's capital to take on ECFC-foe Gallaudet University. The opening kickoff against the Bison (5-4, 3-3 ECFC) is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Gallaudet's Hotchkiss Field.

Maritime One Of Just 16 Undefeated Teams Remaining

The Privateers are one of just 16 undefeated teams still remaining among all 236 NCAA Division III football programs. The list also includes Amherst, DePauw, Hampden-Sydney, Mary Hardin-Baylor, Mount Union, North Central (Ill.), St. Thomas (Minn.), Thomas More, Trine, Wartburg, Wesley, Wheaton (Ill.), Williams, Wisconsin-Whitewater and Wittenberg.

Since the NCAA Division III Football Tournament expanded from 16 to 28 teams in 1999, no team that has finished the season undefeated has been excluded from the national championship tournament. The field has since been expanded to 32 teams. The selections for the tournament will be made on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 3 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPNews.

Maritime Football Continues To Receive Votes In National Coaches' Poll And Regional Poll

            For the third straight week, the Privateer football program received votes in the national American Football Coaches Association Top 25 Coaches' Poll, released on Monday, Nov. 1. Maritime earned four more votes than last week and now sit seven spots outside the top-25 with seven votes.

            The squad is also receiving votes in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Lambert Meadowlands D-II Poll for the fourth straight week.

Privateers Rank Seventh In Country In Rushing; Top-15 In Three Other Categories

            The Privateers currently rank seventh among all NCAA Division-III programs in the nation with 319.89 rushing yards per game thru nine contests in 2010 thus far. This is the second straight season that Maritime has ranked in the top five in the category, as the finished the 2009 campaign with the fourth-best rushing offense in the country.

            The squad's 16.57-yard average on punt returns ranks 12th in the country, its 1.56 turnover margin is 13th, while its .22 sacks allowed per game ranks first among all D-III programs.

            Individually, sophomore linebacker Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) is tied for 28th in the country with an average of 10.78 tackles per game. Barnes' 1.50 tackles for loss per game is tied for 43rd.

Senior Steve Roman (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's by the Sea)-DB (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and junior Sean Wiggers (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan (N.J.))-DB (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan) each lead the squad with four interceptions apiece, which is tied for 75rd in the country (0.44 per game), while junior fullback Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey)'s (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) 83.33 rushing yards per game is good for 90th among his fellow running backs.

Barnes Earns ECFC Defensive Player Accolades For Third Straight Week; Leary Gets Special Teams Honor

            Sophomore linebacker Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) was named the ECFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week Nine after his performance in Maritime's 20-2 home victory over Norwich last Saturday. It was the third straight week that Barnes earned the accolade and the fourth time this season.

            Barnes led the Maritime defense that held Norwich without an offensive score on Saturday. The 6-0, 200-pounder matched the game-high with 11 tackles (eight solo and three assisted), including 2.5 for combined losses of 10 yards. He had one sack for a loss of four yards and played a part in two turnovers in the game: an interception on the opening drive that he returned 31 yards and a forced fumble in the third quarter. Barnes also recorded a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry.

            Senior kicker Madison Leary (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) earned his second Special Teams Player of the Week honor of the season after his efforts in Week Nine. Leary averaged 48.3 yards on three kickoffs (145 yards total) on Saturday. The 6-4, 205-pounder kicked and then recovered a surprise onside kick in the third quarter after the Privateers' third touchdown to keep the momentum on Maritime's side. Leary also served as the Privateers' long snapper.

Barnes also earned the Defensive Player of the Week nod after the Week One victory over Mass. Maritime. That makes nine times this season that a Privateer player has earned an ECFC Weekly Honor, which is a conference-high. Freshman Thomas Davis (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury)-RB/KR (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) was Week One and Week Two Special Teams Player of the Week and also Week Two Rookie of the Week. Sophomore linebacker Pat Lasher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) was named the Week Three and Week Five Defensive Player of the Week.

Vote For Head Coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes For Liberty Mutual Coach Of The Year

            This year, as in years past, the general public will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite coach as the recipient of the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award. The top 15 coaches after fan voting ends on Dec. 14 will be eligible for the award.

Currently, Maritime head coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes sits in seventh place in the country in the Division III category with 1,590 votes. Inside The Series With Gallaudet

Saturday's contest will be the fifth meeting in the NCAA between the two schools, with the Bison holding a 1-3 series lead. The two teams last met in the Week 10 season-finale, with Gallaudet coming out on top, 16-13, here in Throggs Neck.
