Cross Country Completes Season At NCAA Regionals

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 16, 2010) – The Maritime cross country team wrapped up the 2010 season this past Saturday at the NCAA Atlantic Region championship at Fortin Park in Oneonta, N.Y. The men finished in 33rd place, averaging 29:05 for the 8000 meter (4.97 mile) course, the fourth fastest in school history.

The top five finishers for the Privateers were all sophomores: Luke Milano (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (158th/28:10), Gabriel Rosa (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) (182nd/28:40), Sam Rainard (Wheaton, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) (Wheaton, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) (29:06), Matt Taraboletti (Titusville, Fla./Astronaut) (217th/29:37), and Pat Evans (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) (224th/29:50). Junior Tom Moskowitz (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) (241st/30:41) and freshman Cory O'Farrell (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) (246th/30:54) rounded out the scoring for Maritime.

In the women's 6000 meter championship, freshman Jackie Bellisari (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity) finished 167th in a time of 26:15. Junior Alexandra Carela (Paterson, N.J./Wayne) also competed, finishing in 225th place with a time of 30:27.

The NCAA meet capped off a successful year for the Maritime harriers. The men's team won the York Invitational and finished second in the Queensborough Invitational, the Hunter Invitational, and the Skyline Conference meet. The women tied for first in the Queensborough meet, tied for third in the 16-team York Invitational, and finished fourth in the Skyline Championship. Maritime placed five runners on the All-conference team: Milano, Bellisari, and Rosa made the first team while Rainard and Taraboletti made the second team.

Post season awards: Milano and Bellisari were named the team's most valuable runners. Taraboletti and senior Danielle Roberts (Candor, N.Y./Candor) were named recipients of the Coach's Award. Evans, Carela, and junior Eddie Albrecht (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) were named Most Improved and Moskowitz and Carela were chosen by their teammates as next year's captains. Additionally, Taraboletti was elected President of the college's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
