THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 4, 2010) – The Maritime men's cross country team finished third in a 15 team field and the women finished seventh in a 13 team field at the Mount Saint Mary Cross Country Invitational this past Saturday in Newburgh, N.Y. The men finished ahead of six Skyline Conference rivals and seven points behind Skyline-favorite Farmingdale State.
The harriers were once again led by sophomore Luke Milano (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), who covered the hilly 8000 meter course in the time of 30:02 to finish in sixth place. Sophomore Sam Rainard (Wheaton, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) (Wheaton, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) ran his best race of the season by finishing only 34 seconds behind Milano in 15th place. Sophomore Matt Taraboletti (Titusville, Fla./Astronaut) also ran his best race of the year, finishing 13 seconds behind Rainard in 19th place. Sophomores Gabriel Rosa (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) (Wilkes Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) and Pat Evans (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) and freshmen Cory O'Farrell (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) and Frank Morgera (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) rounded out the scoring for the Privateers.
“I was pleased with how we ran, considering we trained through the meet,” commented head coach Jim Driscoll. “I was especially encouraged by how well Rainard and Taraboletti ran. They are closing the gap on Milano and if we are going to have any shot at winning the conference meet in four weeks, they are going to have to continue to do so.”
On the women's side, Maritime was once again led by freshmen Jackie Bellisari (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity), who finished in fifth position with a time of 22:21 over the 5000 meter course. She was followed by juniors Lisa Wasson (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Sacred Heart) (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Sacred Heart), Catherine Brady (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North), Alexandra Carela (Paterson, N.J./Wayne) (Paterson, N.J./Wayne), and senior Danielle Roberts (Candor, N.Y./Candor) (Candor, N.Y./Candor).
“Bellisari continues to get better each week and will certainly be in the lead pack at the conference meet in a few weeks,” stated Driscoll. “Two Mount Saint Mary women went 1-2, but the meet was on their home course and the conference meet will be on our home course.”
Both teams are off this weekend before returning to the course at the York Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park on October 17.
