THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Nov. 1, 2010) - The Maritime men's cross country team was runner-up and the women placed fourth at the Skyline Conference Cross Country Championships held at Van Cortlandt Park this past Sunday. The men tallied 47 points, 10 more than the winner, St Joseph's. The women tallied 119 points in finishing fourth. Maritime's President, VADM John Craine, was present at the meet and, along with Skyline commissioner, Tracy King, handed out the awards after the races. Maritime College was the host of this year's championships, with over 20 members of the NROTC unit helping out on the course.

The men were led by four All-Conference runners. Sophomore Luke Milano (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (Wantagh, N.Y.) raced to a season best time of 28:03 over the 8000 meter (4.97 mile) course in finishing second overall in the 87 runner field. Milano was followed by fellow sophomores Gabriel Rosa (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) (sixth), Sam Rainard (Wheaton, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) (Wheaton, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) (eighth), and Matt Taraboletti (Titusville, Fla./Astronaut) (11th). Each of these runners earned All-Conference recognition for the second year in the row. Sophomore Pat Evans (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) (20th), junior Tom Moskowitz (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) (25th), and freshman Cory O'Farrell (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) (34th and the 8th freshman) rounded out the scoring for Maritime. Senior Matt Berntson (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West), a part of the 2007 conference championship team as a freshman, ran his final collegiate race and finished 59th.

"I couldn't be prouder of the Men of Maritime," said head coach Jim Driscoll. "They absolutely ran their best meet of the year when it counted the most. Milano continued his super season by finishing second and we had a nice pack in support. It was a great all around effort."

On the women's side, freshman Jackie Bellisari (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity) helped the team to their highest finish ever in the conference meet. Bellisari finished 3rd with a time of 21:31 in the 3.1 mile race. She was followed by juniors Emily Motz (Amelia, Ohio/Glen Este) (Amelia, Ohio/Glen Este) (26th), Lisa Wasson (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Sacred Heart) (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Sacred Heart) (31st), Alexandra Carela (Paterson, N.J./Wayne) (Paterson, N.J./Wayne) (37th), Catherine Brady (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North), and senior Danielle Roberts (Candor, N.Y./Candor) (Candor, N.Y./Candor) (49th).

"The women ran great, as well," stated Driscoll. "Jackie earned first team All-Conference by virtue of her terrific race. She has developed into an outstanding collegiate runner and has a bright future on the national level if she keeps at it."

The cross country season will conclude on Saturday, November 13, when the harriers compete in the NCAA Division III Atlantic regional championships, hosted by SUNY Oneonta. The men will start at 11 a.m. and the women will race at noon.
