Men’s Soccer Wins 2010 Skyline Regular Season Championship With 4-0 Road Victory Over Mount Saint Vincent Thursday Night

            THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2010) – The Maritime men's soccer team captured the 2010 Skyline Conference Regular Season Championship outright late last night with a 4-0 shutout victory over local conference rival Mount Saint Vincent at Gaelic Park on the campus of Manhattan College in Riverdale. The win improves the Privateers' record to 12-8 overall (8-2 Skyline), while the Dolphins fall to 3-7-3 (2-6-2 Skyline).

            Maritime was led by junior Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) who recorded two goals on the night. His first came in just the seventh minute of action on a penalty kick. The 5-9, 160-pounder struck again in the 31st minute to give the Privateers a 3-0 lead. Junior Kevin Connolly (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) picked up an assist on Tursi's second goal.

            Freshman Nicholas LaRocca (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) scored in between Tursi's two goals in the 12th minute off a cross by junior John Blunden (Arlington, Va./Washington). Sophomore Haluk Erdogan (Izmir,Turkey/Aliaga Alp Oguz Anadolu Lisesi) (Izmir,Turkey/Aliaga Alp Oguz Anadolu Lisesi) rounded out the scoring for Maritime in the opening minute of the second half to make the score 4-0.

            In goal for the Privateers, senior Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) played most of the first half and made one save to pick up his sixth win of the season, while sophomore Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack) finished the game and made three saves.

            For Mount Saint Vincent, four different players recorded shots on goal, but the Dolphins were unable to find the back of the net. Goalkeeper Javier Mandujano made three saves in the losing effort.

            Moving forward, the Maritime men's soccer team has earned a first round bye in the 2010 Skyline Conference Tournament as the number one overall seed. The Privateers will play the winner of the No. 4 seed Sage Gators vs. the No. 5 seed St. Joseph's Eagles, who will square off this Saturday in the opening round. The semi-final match against the winner of that game will be played at Reinhart Field on Wednesday, Nov. 3. Game time will be 7 p.m.
