Football Hosts 2009 ECFC Champs Norwich Saturday In Battle For First Place In Conference

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2010) – The undefeated Maritime football team (8-0, 5-0 ECFC) will play host to the Cadets of Norwich University (7-1, 4-1 ECFC) on Saturday, Oct. 30, in a battle for first place in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference. Kickoff is schedule for 1 p.m. at Reinhart Field.

A Great Battle Of 8-0 Vs. 7-1 On Saturday!

            The Privateers face their toughest opponent yet this season when they square off against the Cadets on Saturday. Norwich comes into the contest with a 7-1 record, losing to only ECFC-opponent Mount Ida on the road, 22-21, on Sept. 25. The Cadets are the reigning ECFC Champions, as they finished the 2009 season with an 8-3 record and a perfect 6-0 mark in ECFC action.

Third Annual FDNY Chili Cook-Off To Be Held Saturday At Reinhart Field

            If the heat from the intensity of the action on the field doesn't warm you up on the crisp fall day Saturday, then perhaps a number of free samples of some warm chili will! For the third-straight year, the Maritime Football team will be hosting its annual Bronx Firehouse Chili Cook-Off. Representatives from several local firehouses will be stationed behind the bleachers, each with their own chili, which you, the fans, will vote on for the “BEST FDNY FIREHOUSE CHILI.” The winner will be announced at halftime.

SUNY Maritime's Semper Fidelis Society To Collect Toys For “Toys For Tots”

            Attendees to tomorrow's game are encouraged to please join SUNY Maritime's Semper Fidelis Society in supporting the United States Marine Corps Reserve's Toys For Tots Drive. Uniformed Midshipmen will be collecting any new unwrapped toys and monetary donations next to the stands at Reinhart Field.

Maritime Football To Honor 2010 Senior Class Prior To Kickoff

            The Privateers will pay a special tribute to their eight graduating seniors prior to kickoff of the game tomorrow afternoon with a special Senior Day Ceremony. Bronx PeeWee Warriors To Play Game At Reinhart Field Prior To Privateers

            Prior to the collegiate action on Saturday, the Bronx Warriors Pee Wee Football League will be holding a contest on Reinhart Field between two of its teams. The game will begin at 9:30 a.m. Come early to cheer on the local pee wee football organization in the Bronx! Participants and their families will be staying to enjoy the action between Maritime and Norwich later in the day.

Privateers Ranked Sixth In First NCAA Regional Ranking Of Season

            The Maritime football team ranks sixth in the East Region in the first Division-III regional rankings of the 2010 season, released by the NCAA on Wednesday, Oct. 27. To read the full release by the NCAA, click here.

Maritime Football Continues To Receive Votes In National Coaches' Poll And Regional Poll

            For the second straight week, the Privateer football program received votes in the national American Football Coaches Association Top 25 Coaches' Poll, released on Monday, Oct. 25. Maritime earned one more vote than last week and now sit 14 spots outside the top-25 with three votes.

            The squad is also receiving votes in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Lambert Meadowlands D-II Poll for the third straight week.

Privateers Rank Seventh In Country In Rushing; Top-15 In Two Other Categories

            The Privateers currently rank seventh among all NCAA Division-III programs in the nation with 324.13 rushing yards per game thru eight contests in 2010 thus far. This is the second straight season that Maritime has ranked in the top five in the category, as the finished the 2009 campaign with the fourth-best rushing offense in the country.

            The squad's 17.85-yard average on punt returns ranks 10th in the country, while its .13 sacks allowed per game ranks first among all D-III programs.

            Individually, sophomore linebacker Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) is tied for 31st in the country with an average of 10.75 tackles per game. Senior Steve Roman (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's by the Sea)-DB (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) and junior Sean Wiggers (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan (N.J.))-DB (Norwood, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan) each lead the squad with four interceptions apiece, which is tied for 53rd in the country (0.50 per game). Junior fullback Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey)'s (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) 88.50 rushing yards per game is good for 70th among his fellow running backs.

Barnes Earns ECFC Defensive Player Accolades For Second Straight Week

            Sophomore linebacker Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) was named the ECFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week Eight after his performance in Maritime's 37-35 victory over Mount Ida on the road last Saturday. It was the second straight week that Barnes earned this accolade and the third time this season.

The 6-0, 240-pounder once again led all players on defense with 12 total tackles (11 solo and one assisted), including two for combined losses of three yards on Saturday. He also forced one fumble and recorded one quarterback hurry in the win.

            Barnes also earned the Defensive Player of the Week nod after the Week One victory over Mass. Maritime. That makes nine times this season that a Privateer player has earned an ECFC Weekly Honor, which is a conference-high. Freshman Thomas Davis (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury)-RB/KR (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) was Week One and Week Two Special Teams Player of the Week and also Week Two Rookie of the Week. Sophomore linebacker Pat Lasher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) was named the Week Three and Week Five Defensive Player of the Week, while senior Madison Leary (Tavares, Fla./Tavares)-K/WR (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) earned Week Six Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

Coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes And Maritime College Featured CBS College Sports Tuesday

            On Tuesday night, CBS College Sports Network ran a remarkable segment on Maritime football head coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes and his story this season. The piece focused on Kendrick-Holmes' life as Maritime College's football coach, his commitment as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserves and his impending deployment to Afghanistan as a U.S. Navy officer upon the completion of the 2010 Privateer football season.             This year, as in years past, the general public will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite coach as the recipient of the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award. The top 15 coaches after fan voting ends on Dec. 14 will be eligible for the award.

Inside The Series With Norwich

            Saturday's game will be the fifth meeting between Maritime College and Norwich, with the Cadets holding a 3-1 lead in the series. Norwich won the first two games between the teams in 2006 and 2007, but the Privateers won a home matchup in 2008, 34-20. Last season, the Cadets came out on top, 15-3, up in Northfield, Vt.
