THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 25, 2010) – The Maritime men's soccer team lost to non-conference opponent the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 1-0, in the first overtime Monday night at Reinhart Field. The Privateers' record falls to 11-8 overall in defeat, while the Bears improve to 6-8-1 and end a five-game losing streak.
The game was closely contested throughout, with each team having their fair share of good scoring opportunities. Maritime had a clear shot saved in the opening minutes of the game, before Coast Guard started to control a good portion of the half. The Bears actually had one shot ring off the post in just the 13th minute. Neither team broke through with a goal, however, and the teams went into halftime scoreless.
In the second half, Maritime had the momentum and nearly scored twice on two shots within minutes of each other by sophomore Haluk Erdogan (Izmir,Turkey/Aliaga Alp Oguz Anadolu Lisesi) (Izmir,Turkey/Aliaga Alp Oguz Anadolu Lisesi) that were saved by USCGA goalie Chris Tarbell. Another shot by Erdogan late in the half rang off the crossbar. Again the teams went scoreless during the half, forcing Golden Goal overtime scenario.
In just the fourth minute of the first overtime period, Bears' sophomore Daniel Spangler won the game when he streaked up the right side of the field on a break and beat senior Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis), who came out to pressure.
Tarbell finished the night with five saves for Coast Guard and earned his sixth victory of the season, while Papson made six saves in the losing effort.
Maritime returns to action with its regular-season finale on Thursday, Oct. 28, when the squad will travel to face local Skyline Conference-foe Mount St. Vincent. Game time against the Dolphins is set for 8:30 p.m. in Riverdale, N.Y.
