THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 25, 2010) – The Men's cross country team took sixth place in a 22-team field and the women placed 12th in a 19-team field at the St Joseph's Invitational at Sunken Meadow State Park on Saturday. The meet served as a final tune up ahead of the Skyline Championships next weekend. The men were third in the field of 8 NCAA Division III colleges, while the women finished 5th of 7 Division III schools.
The men were paced by sophomore Luke Milano (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (Wantagh, N.Y.), who finished 20th in the 173 runner field. Milano covered the hilly five-mile course in a time of 29:27, averaging 5:54 for each mile. Milano was followed closely by fellow sophomores Gabriel Rosa (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) (22nd/29:36) and Sam Rainard (Wheaton, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) (Wheaton, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) (24th/29:39). Sophomores Matt Taraboletti (Titusville, Fla./Astronaut) (38th/30:10) and Pat Evans (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) (50th/30:54), junior Tom Moskowitz (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) (64th/31:50), and freshman Cory O'Farrell (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) rounded out the scoring for the Privateers.
“The Men of Maritime ran their best team race of the year,” commented head coach Jim Driscoll. “Rosa and Rainard are now within 12 seconds of Milano and our number 1 through 5 runner split was just 1:26, our best of the year. We beat four NCAA Division II schools, including one who flew up from Georgia, and we appear to be running our best with one week to go to the Conference championship.”
The women ran strong despite competing without their top runner, freshman Jackie Bellisari (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity), who sat the meet out with a strep throat. The women were led by junior Emily Motz (Amelia, Ohio/Glen Este) (Amelia, Ohio/Glen Este) who covered the 5000 meter (3.1 miles) course in 24:01, good for 45th place in the 158 runner field. Juniors Catherine Brady (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) (53rd/24:49), Lisa Wasson (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Sacred Heart) (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Sacred Heart) (54th/24:52), and Alexandra Carela (Paterson, N.J./Wayne) (Paterson, N.J./Wayne) (64th/25:53) and senior Danielle Roberts (Candor, N.Y./Candor) (Candor, N.Y./Candor) (75th/27:07) completed the scoring for Maritime.
“I thought the women ran a courageous race without our top runner,” stated Driscoll. “We held Bellisari out as a precautionary measure. I think she will be okay to run in the conference meet next Sunday.”
Following the meet, the student-athletes enjoyed a picnic hosted by the parents. “All season, we have had the best support of all the conference schools,” commented Driscoll. “Some of the parents travelled three hours to get to the meet Saturday and then they put on a feast. It was terrific!”
Maritime College will be the host school for next Sunday's Conference Cross Country Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The women's 5000 meter championship will be at noon and the men's 8000 meter championship will be at 1 p.m.
“The teams to beat on the men's side are St Joseph's and defending champion Farmingdale State, who edged us out last year by only 13 points,” said Driscoll. “But Maritime returns four All-Conference runners from last year and the meet is on our home course. I know we will run our best race of the year on Sunday and we'll see where the cards fall. As for the women, I think our team is well positioned to make a run at the top four. It should make for an exciting day.”
