THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 2, 2010) – The Maritime men's soccer team lost to Skyline opponent NYU-Poly, 2-0, Saturday night at Reinhart Field. The loss drops the Privateers record to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in Skyline action, while the Fighting Blue Jays improve to 7-2-1, including 2-1 in conference games.
The Blue Jays scored off a corner kick that was headed in by freshman Giovanni Ormaeche in the 21st minute to take a 1-0 lead, which they would carry into halftime. At the break, play was almost even as NYU-Poly only outshot Maritime by 4-3.
The Privateers had more opportunities in the second half, outshooting the Jays 10-7 in the half, but it was Poly that would break through with a goal in the 58th minute off of a free kick that was headed in by sophomore Mamadou Dianko.
In goal for Maritime, sophomore Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack) made three saves in the losing effort and was replaced in the second half by senior Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis), who made two saves.
The men's soccer team returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 5, when they take play host to conference opponent Old Westbury (8-4, 4-1 Skyline). Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
