THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 19, 2010) – The Maritime men's soccer team had its highest output of goals of the season in a 7-0 shutout victory over conference-foe Purchase Tuesday night at Reinhart Field. The Privateers improved to 10-7 overall (6-2 Skyline) with the victory, while the Panthers fall to 1-12-2 (0-8-1 Skyline).
Maritime also moves into a tie for second place in the Skyline Conference with Old Westbury. The two teams trail first-place Sage (6-2-1) by just one point.
Senior James Cronin (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park) (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park) led the Privateers with a pair of goals on the night, as he ended the scoring in the contest. Junior Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) (Smithtown, N.Y./Kings Park) opened the scoring with a goal in the 21st minute.
Juniors Tom Federico (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and John Blunden (Arlington, Va./Washington) each recorded a goal and an assist in the victory, while senior Erik Mittermeier (Pomona, N.Y./Ramapo) and freshmen David Sparozic (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) and Yunus Yildiz (Adapazari, Turkey/Yenikent Anudolu Lisesi) (Adapazari, Turkey/Yenikent Anudolu Lisesi) each had an assist.
Sophomores Haluk Erdogan (Izmir,Turkey/Aliaga Alp Oguz Anadolu Lisesi) (Izmir,Turkey/Aliaga Alp Oguz Anadolu Lisesi) and Ryan Nugent (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) scored Maritime's second and third goals, respectively.
In goal, senior Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) picked up his fourth victory of the season after stopping one shot in the first half of play. He was replaced at halftime by sophomore Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y. / Commack), who along with freshman John Dunne (Southold, N.Y./Southold) (Southold, N.Y./Southold) helped to preserve the shutout in the second half.
The Privateers return to action this Saturday, Oct. 23, when the squad travels to Troy, N.Y., to take on Skyline-opponent Sage. Game time against the Gators is scheduled for 1 p.m.
