THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2010) – The Maritime men's cross country team bested a field of 14 teams when they won the York Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park on Sunday. The harriers scored a winning total of 49 points. Baruch College was second with 77 points and Yeshiva finished third with 94 points.
Maritime was led by sophomore Luke Milano (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), who finished in second place in the field of 123 runners with a time of 28:45 over the 8000 meter course. Milano was followed by fellow sophomores Gabriel Rosa (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) (Wilkes Barre, Pa./G.A.R. Memorial) (4th), Sam Rainard (Wheaton, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) (Wheaton, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) (9th), Matt Taraboletti (Titusville, Fla./Astronaut) (17th) and Pat Evans (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) (18th). Freshman Cory O'Farrell (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) (24th) and junior Tom Moskowitz (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) (27th) completed the scoring for Maritime. Freshman Frank Morgera (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) (33rd) and junior Eddie Albrecht (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) (35th) also ran well for the Privateers.
“The good news is that our times are continuing to improve, our split between our first and fifth runner is down to 1:43, and we won the meet,” commented head coach Jim Driscoll. “The bad news is we are not running as a team, I was hoping for six or seven guys under 30 minutes (instead of the three who did), and our times are still lagging conference co-favorites St Joe's and Farmingdale State. Rosa and Evans ran well. If we are going to have a shot at winning the conference meet in two weeks, Rosa and Rainard have to continue to close Milano, and Taraboletti and Evans have to close our big three. We stopped our two a day workouts on Friday, we'll ease off on the training over the next two weeks, and we'll have the men ready to run their best team race of the year at the Conference meet on our home course. This team is as mentally tough and committed as any I've had, and they will be ready.”
Freshman Jackie Bellisari (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity) (Albertson, N.Y./Holy Trinity) led the women to a tie for third place in the 16 team field. Ocean CC won the meet with 47 points, Hunter College was second with 64 points, and Maritime tied Pratt College for third with 122 points. The Privateers also bested three other Skyline Conference schools. Bellisari finished third in the field of 112 runners with a time of 25:45 over the 6000 meter course. Bellisari was followed by juniors Emily Motz (Amelia, Ohio/Glen Este) (Amelia, Ohio/Glen Este) (20th), Kristen Saporito (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) (32nd), Lisa Wasson (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Sacred Heart) (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Sacred Heart) (34th), and Alexandra Carela (Paterson, N.J./Wayne) (Paterson, N.J./Wayne) (37th).
“I thought Jackie ran a great race,” remarked Driscoll. “She is running well and will be ready for the Conference meet in two weeks. That race will only be 5000 meters instead of 6000 meters, and I think she is even better at the shorter distance, as are most of our women.”
The men's and women's teams will have one more tune-up before the conference meet when they travel to Sunken Meadow State Park on Long Island next Saturday, Oct. 23, to compete in the St Joseph's Invitational. The women's 5000 meter race will start at noon and the men's 5 mile race will start at 1 pm.
