THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2010) – The Maritime men's soccer team lost to non-conference opponent Vassar College, 2-0, at home Saturday morning at Reinhart Field. With the loss, the Privateers fall to 9-7 overall on the season, while the Brewers improve to 8-5.
Both of Vassar's goals came in the first half, the first by Zander Mrlik was off of a corner by Ross Macklin from the right side that was headed in in the 21st minute. The Brewers went ahead 2-0 in the 41st minute when Evan Seltzer collected a pass from Harrison Freund and found the back of the net from the left side.
The best chance for the Privateers to score came just minutes before Seltzer's tally in the 38th minute when a shot by junior John Blunden (Arlington, Va./Washington) was saved by one of the Vassar defenders at the right post.
In goal for Maritime, senior Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) got the starting nod and recorded two goals in the losing effort. He was replaced at halftime by sophomore Mike Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack), who held the Brewers from advancing their lead by making two saves.
The Privateers return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 19, when they play host to conference-opponent Purchase State at 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
