First-Place Privateers Host Becker College Saturday At 2 p.m.

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2010) – On Saturday afternoon, the Maritime football team returns home after two weekends away to face Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) opponent Becker College. Kickoff between the first-place Privateers (6-0, 3-0 ECFC) and the Hawks (1-5, 1-2 ECFC) is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Reinhart Field.

Maritime Football To Recognize National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

On Saturday, the Maritime football team will recognize National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) and show their support for those affected by the deadly condition by taking the field with special pink mouthpieces, wristbands and chin straps. For more information on NBCAM, click here.

Privateers To Welcome Local Girl Scouts For 2010 Girl Scout Day

            The Privateers have invited members of the Girls Scouts of Nassau County and the Valley Stream Association of Girl Scouts to the football game on Saturday. The Girl Scouts will be recognized before the game and will be on the field for the playing of the national anthem.

Maritime Receiving Votes In ECAC Poll; A Program First

            The Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) unveiled its first poll of the 2010 season, the Lambert Meadowlands Division III Poll, on Monday and the Maritime football team made its first appearance in program history on any kind of poll, regionally or nationally. The Privateers were one of eight teams receiving votes just outside of the Top 10.

            Fifth-year head coach Clayton Kendrick-Holmes was quoted as saying, “It is really an honor to be recognized in this poll. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of these players and the coaching staff. There is still a lot of season left to play and we have to focus one week at a time.”

The Privateers improved to 6-0 after a 41-28 Week Six road victory over Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) opponent Castleton State up in Vermont. With that victory, Maritime also moved into sole possession of first place in the ECFC with a 3-0 mark. The Privateers began the season with three wins over non-conference opponents Mass. Maritime, Western Connecticut State and Kings Point. Maritime then opened conference play with a 47-21 victory over Husson at home, before a 43-20 road win over Anna Maria.

Maritime Ranks Fifth In The Nation In Rushing Offense; Top-10 In Two Other Categories

            The Privateers enter Saturday's game ranking fifth in the nation in rushing offense with an average of 341.0 yards per game. This is the second straight season that Maritime has ranked in the top five in the category, as the finished the 2009 campaign with the fourth-best rushing offense in the country.

            The squad's 18.3-yard average on punt returns ranks eighth of all 235 teams in NCAA Division III, while its .17 sacks allowed ranks second in the nation.

            Individually, sophomore linebacker Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) is tied for 29th in the country with an average of 10.83 tackles per game. Junior fullback Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey)'s (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) 93.3 rushing yards per game is good for 61st among his fellow running backs.

Leary Named ECFC Week Six Special Teams Player Of The Week

            For the third time in his career and the first time this season, senior kicker/wide receiver Madison Leary (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) (Tavares, Fla./Tavares) was named the ECFC Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance in the Privateers 41-28 victory over Castleton State in week six.

            Leary was 6-for-7 in PAT kicks for the Privateers in the win on Saturday. The 6-4, 205-pounder also averaged 49.7 yards per kick on seven kickoffs (348 yards total). He also caught one pass for 20 yards for a first down in the second quarter. Leary also earned this same honor twice during the 2009 season.

            That makes seven times this season that a Privateer player has earned an ECFC Weekly Honor, which is a conference-high. Freshman Thomas Davis (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury)-RB/KR (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) was Week One and Week Two Special Teams Player of the Week and also Week Two Rookie of the Week. Sophomore linebacker Pat Lasher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) was named the Week Three and Week Five Defenseive Player of the Week, while Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury) earned that accolade in Week One.

Inside The Series With Becker College

            This will be the fifth meeting between the Privateers and the Hawks, with Maritime leading the series, 3-1. The two teams last met on Oct. 17, 2009 in Worcester, Mass. with the Privateers coming out on top, 68-6. Becker's only win of the four previous meetings was during the 2007 season, a 28-14 home victory.

Maritime Privateers Breakdown

            The fifth-ranked rushing offense in the nation is led by junior fullback Jamie Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) who has a team-best 560 rushing yards on 78 carries (7.2 yards per carry). Spanopoulos has three touchdowns on the season thus far. Sophomore QB Joe Dickey (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North (N.J.)) (Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) has scored the most rushing TDs for the Privateers (seven) and ranks second on the squad with 355 rushing yards. Seniors Greg McGough (Edgewater, Md./Blessed Trinity (Ga.)) (Edgewater, Md./Blessed Trinity) – 333 yards and four touchdowns – and John Gagliano (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's) (Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's) – 307 yards and three touchdowns – rank third and fourth, repectively.

            Dickey has passed for 391 yards and six touchdowns on 26-of-59 completions in six games this year. His main target is sophomore Erik Heedles (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) (Staten Island, N.Y./New Dorp) who has registered 174 receiving yards and has caught four TD passes. Backup QB, freshman Tyler Trodden (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) (Somers, N.Y./JFK Catholic), has thrown for 79 yards (3-for-4 on completions) and has one touchdown to sophomore Fritz Jean (Palm Coast, Fla./Palm Coast (Fla.)) (Palm Coast, Fla./Palm Coast). Jean has recorded five scores for the Privateers thus far, rushing for three TDs and receiving two.

            On defense, Maritime is led by Keith Barnes (Westbury, N.Y./Westbury), who has a team-best 65 tackles (41 solo and 24 assisted), including 5.5 for combined losses of 19 yards – he has also recovered one fumble. Pat Lasher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) ranks second on the squad with 50 tackles (33 solo and 17 assisted), including 4.5 for losses of eight yards. Lasher has two interceptions and has brought one back on a 40-yard return for a touchdown, the Privateers lone defensive touchdown of the season. Senior co-captain Steve Roman (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's by the Sea) (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's by the Sea) leads the team with three interceptions, while three players: junior Rob Gorgy (Hillsborough, N.J./Immaculata (N.J.)) (Hillsborough, N.J./Immaculata) and sophomores Ricky McClain (Wantagh, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) (Wantagh, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) and Thomas Boney (Jacksonville, Fla./University Christian (Fla.)) (Jacksonville, Fla./University Christian) each have a team-leading three sacks.

Scouting The Becker Hawks

            Becker has a pretty even balance between rushing yards (781) and passing yard (533) on the season and is led by head coach William McDonald. The Hawks finished the 2009 season with an 0-10 record (0-6 ECFC).

Senior running back Paul Casimir has a team-best 399 rushing yards and has found the end zone twice in 2010. Freshman quarterback William Ramirez is 33-for-69 in completions for 302 passing yards and three touchdowns. Freshman wideout Luis Sanchez lead's the Hawks with 175 receiving yards on seven catches with two touchdowns.

On defense, Becker is led by senior d-back Jake Bateman, who has 34 tackles on the year (25 solo and nine assisted). Freshman Christopher Williams leads the Hawks in sacks with two, while four different players have recorded an interception.
