WEST HARRISON, N.Y. (Oct. 12, 2010) – The Maritime men's soccer team travelled up to Silver Lake Park last night to take on Skyline opponent Yeshiva and came out victorious, 6-2. With the win, the Privateers improve to 9-6 overall (5-2 Skyline), while the Maccabees fall to 0-5-1 (0-3-1 Skyline).
Freshman James Cole (Northville, N.Y./Northville) (Northville, N.Y./Northville) opened the scoring in the game when he took a pass from junior Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) and found the back of the net in the 7th minute. The Privateers scored three more goals just minutes before halftime to extend their lead to 4-0. Juniors Tom Federico (Islip, N.Y./Islip) (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and Kevin Connolly (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) scored in the 39th and 41st minutes, respectively, before freshman David Sparozic (Carmel, N.Y./Mahopac) tallied a goal off an assist by classmate Alex Smith (Goshen, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic) (Goshen, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic).
Senior goalkeeper Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) played the entire first half in goal for Maritime and made three saves, picking up the victory in the game, his third of the season. In the second half, Papson played in the forward position, while sophomore Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and freshman John Dunne (Southold, N.Y./Southold) (Southold, N.Y./Southold) split time between the pipes.
The Privateers scored two more times in the second half, when Cole tallied his second of the game in the 68th minute after a pass from Sparozic. Then, in the 87th minute, with the score 5-2, senior Andrew Rahner (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) registered his first career goal on a penalty kick to end the scoring in the game.
Maritime returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 16, when they play host to non-conference opponent Vassar College. Game time is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Reinhart Field.
