ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. (Jan. 27, 2010) – Junior Justin Bright (Brooklyn, N.Y./Park West) scored a team-high 24 points and brought down 11 boards to help lead the Maritime men's basketball team to an 81-67 win over conference-opponent Bard Thursday night at the Raptors' Stevenson Gymnasium. With the win, the Privateers improve to 11-4 overall (9-3 Skyline), while Bard falls to 1-17 (1-12 Skyline). Also, Maritime has now posted three separate three-game winning streaks during the 2009-10 season.
Bright was three assists shy of a triple-double, as he dished out a game-high seven helpers. The 6-0, 175-pounder from Brooklyn was 9-for-17 from the field, including a 4-for-9 mark from three-point range, with 2-of-3 shooting from the free throw line. Senior Adedokun Olanrewaju (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) also recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 boards, while classmate Andre Cooper (Baltimore, Md./Southwestern) added 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting, five boards and four assists. Junior Giovanni Hurley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Middle College High) was dominant on the glass, matching Bright for the game-high with 11 rebounds.
The score was close in the first half with Bard holding an early lead most of the period until junior Shamair Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) sank a 3-pointer at 6:26 to give Maritime a one-point lead, 25-24. The Privateers would extend that lead to eight by the end of the half, 35-27. The Raptors were held to just 33.3-percent shooting in the half (10-of-30) and Maritime benefited down low with a 14-6 advantage in points in the paint in the stanza.
Bright scored 22 of his 29 points in the second half to propel the Privateers to the victory. He was 8-for-10 from the field, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc in the period. Olanrewaju was also clutch in the second stanza, compiling nine points and five boards (four were offensive, three of which resulted in second chance points). Cooper was helped sustain the lead with eight second-half points.
Maritime held Bard to just 42.1-percent shooting on the night and outrebounded the Raptors, 47-21. The Privateers also had a 14-2 second-chance point-difference and outscored Bard, 16-8, on points off turnovers.
The Maritime men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 30, when the squad plays host to Mount Saint Mary. Tipoff against the visiting Blue Knights (6-11, 5-7) is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium.
