PURCHASE, N.Y. (Sept. 24, 2009) – The Maritime men's soccer team, led by sophomore midfielder Tom Federico (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and junior keeper Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis), defeated Purchase, 4-0, on the road Thursday night in the squad's Skyline Conference opener. With the win, the Privateers improve to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in Skyline action, while the Panthers fall to 3-3-1 (1-1 Skyline).
Federico tallied a goal and two assists in the victory, while Papson turned aside all of Purchase's shots on goal to earn his first individual shutout of the season. Sophomores Cesur Alagoz (Istanbul, Turkey/Ching Deru), John Blunden and Arthur Melody (East Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) scored Maritime's other goals, while Melody and sophomore Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) added an assist apiece.
Maritime controlled most of the action in the first half, but were unable to break through for a goal as the game remained scoreless well into the second half. Finally, after the 70th minute had passed, Federico opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season, off a pass from Melody. Federico assisted on both Alagoz's fifth goal and Bluden's team-leading sixth tally just minutes later. Melody rounded out the scoring with his third goal of the season off an assist by Tursi.
The men's soccer team returns to action on Monday, Sept. 28, when the squad travels to Staten Island to take on CSI. Kickoff between the Privateers and the Dolphins is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the CSI Soccer Complex.
