BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Sept. 21, 2009) – The Maritime men's soccer team defeated the Cougars of Medgar Evers, 4-1, Monday night at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn. With the win, the Privateers improve their record to 5-1 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 1-6-1.
Sophomore John Blunden scored two goals in the victory, raising his season-total to a team-high five goals. Classmates Tom Federico (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and Arthur Melody (East Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay) notched the other tallies for Maritime, who outshot Medgar Evers 20-16.
Frederico got the scoring started with a goal in the 14th minute, his third tally of the season. Blunden gave the Privateers a 2-0 advantage with his first goal just over five minutes later. The forward received a pass off of a free kick by sophomore Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) and buried it home for the tally. The Cougars scored their only goal of the game just minutes before halftime on a breakaway, making the score 2-1, Maritime.
In the second half, Blunden struck early, off a double-assist by Frederico and sophomore Cesur Alagoz (Istanbul, Turkey/Ching Deru) in the 59th minute, giving the Privateers a 3-1 lead. Melody rounded out the scoring with his second goal of the season in the 79th minute.
In net, junior keeper Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis), who earlier in the day was named to the Skyline Conference Men's Soccer Weekly Honor Roll, turned aside five of Medgar Evers' six shots on goal for his fifth victory of the season.
Maritime returns to the pitch this Thursday, Sept. 24, when they travel to the county to the north to face their first conference opponent of the season, the Panthers of SUNY Purchase. Action is set to get underway at 7 p.m. on the SUNY Purchase campus.
