THROGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2009) – The Maritime men's soccer team shut out the visiting Brooklyn College Bridges, 5-0, Wednesday at Reinhart Field to open the 2009 season. With the victory, the Privateers start the season with a win for the second-straight year. Sophomore Cesur Alagoz (Istanbul, Turkey/Ching Deru) led the offense for Maritime with two goals and an assist, while junior Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) was strong in net for 77 minutes and freshman Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) came in for the last 13 minutes to ensure the shutout.
Play was back-and-forth throughout most of the first half, and despite a 14-0 Maritime shot-advantage, the teams went into halftime scoreless. In the second stanza, sophomore John Blunden scored the Privateers first goal of the season in the 52nd minute with a shot from five yards out that sailed passed the keeper into the right side of the net off of a pass by Alagoz.
In the 64th minute, freshman Chris Anderson (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) broke free of the defenders and put one in off the right post to give Maritime a 2-0 advantage. Alagoz then scored two goals less than a minute apart in the same fashion, by firing the ball into the top left corner passed the diving Bridges goalie. Freshman Jesse Bruno (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's by the Sea) rounded out the scoring for the Privateers with a goal off of a free kick from 25 yards out.
The Maritime men's soccer team returns to action on Wed., Sept. 9, when it takes on NYC Tech at 7 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
