THROGS NECK, N.Y. (Sept. 19, 2009) – The Maritime men's soccer team scored four goals in the first 23 minutes of the game then held on to defeat Lehman College by that score, 4-0, Saturday night at Reinhart Field. With the victory, the Privateers improve to 4-1, while the Lightning falls to 0-9.

Sophomore John Blunden got the scoring started with a goal in the seventh minute. The forward received a pass from the right side from senior-captain James Salka (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville) and lightly tapped it into the lower right corner of the net past the scrawling Lehman keeper. Salka had a hand in the next goal in the ninth minute, as he created a two-on-one low in the Lightning zone with sophomore Tom Federico (Islip, N.Y./Islip). Frederico received Salka's pass, went around the defender and blasted it home to put Maritime up 2-0.

Coming off the bench, sophomore William Smith (Southold, N.Y./Southold) contributed the Privateers second goal in the 18th minute. Smith shot the ball high into the net on the rebound of a shot off of a free kick by sophomore Jason Tursi (Farmingdale, N.Y./Plainedge) to make it 3-0. Junior Efosa Ogbeifun (Benin, Nigeria/Chrisland College (Nigeria)) closed out the Maritime scoring with a goal in the 23rd minute. The forward received a pass from freshman Ryan Nugent (Carmel, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) and split the defenders for a breakaway goal.

In net, junior keeper Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) and freshman Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y./Commack) combined for a team-shutout of Lehman. Papson, who played the first 82-plus minutes, faced seven Lightning shots on goal and turned aside all of them. This was Maritime's second shutout of the season.

The Privateers return to action on Monday, Sept. 21, when they travel to nearby Brooklyn, N.Y. to take on Medgar Evans. Kickoff between Maritime and the Cougars is set for 7 p.m. at the Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn.
