THROGS NECK, N.Y. (September 1, 2009) – The Maritime men's soccer team will begin its 2009 season on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 4 p.m., when the team plays host to Brooklyn College at Reinhart Field. First-year head coach and former Privateer-standout Andrew McCarthy will lead the team through a challenging schedule as it will look to improve upon the previous years' successes and qualify for the Skyline Conference tournament for the third-consecutive season.
The team returns 14 members from last year's squad, including two-time first team all-conference player, junior Andrew Rahner (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), who will anchor the defense in front of goalie and captain, junior Harris Papson (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis), who has started in net since he began his career at Maritime.
The team had over 25 freshmen try out for this year's squad and newcomers Chris Anderson (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) and Tom Frederico (Islip, N.Y./Islip) will be called upon to play significant minutes. The team's motivational leader on the field will be senior captain James Salka (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville). James is returning to the team after a year off while serving in the United States Marine Corps in Iraq.
